Is it a grind against the cam cover?
--- If so remove the cam gear cover and see if that fixes it. If so take a dremmel with a grinding wheel to the plastic rings on the inside of the cover. This will fix it.

I hope it is not missing or blown seal where the cam exits the cam cover. Make sure your oil seals are properly installed on the cams behind the gears.

He's a mess. He doesn't even have aftermarket cam gears as I'm sure you were assuming. He just thinks this mysterious noise is coming from his stock cam gears after first thinking it was from his turbo...

Why he hasn't had the Mitsu service dept check out this problem on his brand new 05 is beyond me. What better time to make use of a great warranty than when the car is brand new and still stock?
