First oil change?

I just picked up an Evo and I'm wondering when is the best time(miles) to do my first oil change. I've seached this topic, but I didnt find the answer I was looking for. I've read first oil changes at 1500, 3000 and also at 5000. But, I've also heard that you should change your oil the first 500 miles to get all the gunk and little pieces of metal out. I just want some clarification on when the first oil change should be made, and please state when you first changed your oil. Any other advice for the car is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help

your going to hear all kinds of answers with the 1500 to be most common. Some will even tell you to switch to reg. mineral oil so the piston rings can set.

I dont have evo but I would agree that an early first oil change is a great idea. I had mine changed at 1100, so the earlier the better it wont hurt anything and you will have fresh oil in for the coming cold months.

The first change should be free, Just watch your mileage it can creep up pretty fast depending on how you drive.

Blackstone labs sample taken at 1000 miles indicated that indicated that the change was unnecessary and could have waited until at least 2000 miles

i did my first change, for FREE, at about 1800 miles. . . .like Viscos2000 said above, you can get to 2000 safely, I wouldn't wait to 3000. . .I was checking my dipstick every other day and noticed the gunk building up, so I changed it early. . . .

It depends on your driving as well, my 1800 miles were 600 freeway, and the remaining 1200 city, so lots of stop and go, lots of humidity, lots of 5 minute runs here and there. . .that sort of necessitates earlier intervals. . .from here on out I'm going to go every 6 months or 5000 miles. . .

i dont see why you guys changed your oil so fast..i waited till about 2700 miles..i wanted my oil to set in nice and good to seal up those rings. i checked to make sure the oil wasnt getting low. but why change your oil so early if it hasnt even had enough time to set?

my stuff was set, I asked my rings personally after a long and intimate dinner. . . .rings actually usually set withint the first couple hundred miles, after a couple thousand you're just clearing out the small metallic pieces of wear. . . .whatever. . .to each his own. . .
