Ok, I'm not completely sure how this happened, but it did. I was in 3rd gear and I was going about 40ish and I was merging onto the highway. My music was blasting which bled out the noise of the rev's of the engine. Anyway, I guess I looked down and thought I was in 5th gear or something so I continued to accelerate pretty fast and got all the way up to high 70's ish mph(around that) and then I felt a jolt and when I looked at my Tacometer it was reving at like 9k. I quickly shifted it to 5th and took the nearest exit and checked my car. Have I possibly done any damage to my car? I know these cars are made to take some pressure from the driver, but that light jolt is especially worrying me. Please help!

 

I don't think you made it to 9K. If your still stock you probaly just bounced off the revlimiter, don't sweat it.

 

I know the needle was pretty high up there when I started panicking lol (at least above 8.5k rpm). I think you’re right though, it must have been the rev limiter because after the tad little jolt, I wasn't accelerating at all for like that brief 1 second or 2. I feel really bad for it, and I hope I haven’t done any permanent damage for my sake because I have already lost sleep over this ...

 

Third gear redline of the 5 speed = 83mph. Are you sure you were in 3rd gear? Or do you have the 6 speed?

 

If you are stock - dont worry.

I bounced it off the rev limiter twice the day I bought it (and hit probably twice a week ever since). Car is perfect.

 

Yes, I was in 3rd gear, and I only have 5 gears. Honestly, I could have been going 83 mph as I saw I was going like high 70's by the time I noticed or whatnot.
Boomtown, to answer your question, I am completely stock except for my tint .

Honestly, I'm amazed that people like this own Evo's...simply amazed. Here's a few things I must point out:

1) Your 3rd gear goes way, way past 70...my 3rd gear in the 6spd goes to 83-84mph, and yours goes further.

2) We all have built-in rev limiters at 7600rpm. You weren't at 9k...you weren't at 8.5k. At worst, you hit the rev limiter at 7600rpm, which is well below the point at which you can damage the engine.

3) If you hit the rev limiter, you know it...it pops real fast, cuts fuel, and takes away all the power.

4) I regular bounce off the rev limiter in _4th gear_ at the drag strip at 110-111mph. You hitting the rev limiter once is nothing to worry about.

Have you really never hit the rev limiter before in any car?

Rev limiter, of course. The whole point of this thread was him supposedly hitting the rev limiter. If he went to 7k rpm, then shifted, then none of this would make any sense, because nothing happens at 7k rpm.

Actually I think the whole point of his post was he thought he hit 9,000 rpm at <80 mph in 3rd gear. I pointed out that he didn't even hit redline at that speed.

 

Yes, that's what it looked like on the surface, but once you put a few things together, it sounds like he 1) hit the rev limiter, 2) has no clue what his rpm was, 3) has no clue what his speed was, and 4) has never driven his car hard before (or any car).

What I think might have happened is he saw 90 on his speedometer, thought it was his tach, and hit the rev limiter.

I'll have to edit that. There is no 90 on the speedo, or is there? I can't remember if they're even or odd.

Ahh, I don't know what he did.

 

I had owned 3 or 4 manual trans cars before my evo, and I had never bounced off the rev limiter until I hung out with YOU at Mason Dixon, you're a bad influence!!!!

Cause the next day I did it again. I hate bouncing off the limiter =/

 

Haha, well that point in time happened to coincide with when you started DRIVING the Evo properly!
