MY05 EVO First oil change- Blackstone lab analysis

EQUIPMENT MAKE: Mitsubishi
EQUIPMENT MODEL: 4G63 2.0L 4-cyl
FUEL TYPE: Gasoline (Unleaded)
OIL USE INTERVAL: 2,031 Miles
OIL TYPE & GRADE: Mobil 1 10W/30 (Gas)
MAKE-UP OIL ADDED:
ADDITIONAL INFO:
COMMENTS:
CHRIS: This new 2.0L engine is coming along well at the first oil change. The high wear metals, manganese and silicon are not unusual finds in the oil from your new Mitsubishi. In fact, we would have been surprised if we didn't find them. The wear is high due to break-in of new parts, while silicon is from sealers and sand-casted parts. Universal averages show typical wear metals for an oil from this engine after 2,910 miles oil use. We expect your engine will look that good or better in two or three more oil changes. It will look better next sample. The TBN was 9.2, very high!

$20 from Blackstone labs. Additional $10 for TBN. The TBN will help you approximate the percentage of protective addatives remaining in the sample. This information may allow you to lengthen the intervals between oil changes.

You can request a sampling kit and they will send it out to you quickly. They're site is full of information and additional instructions are included in the kit. The Blackstone site also provides a letter to show at Fedex or the post office showing that the oil sample is consided non-hazardous due to its flash point.

The amount of oil sampled is very small, maybe between 4 - 6oz.

Consider this just another tool to monitor vehicle health.

After comparing this sample with Ergo Evo's results, we found that I had a significantly higher level of Manganese in my sample. I suspect that this is related to running an octane booster with MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) and will confirm with Terry at Blackstone tomorrow.

If I do this, the letter will say the following:

Dear Benjamin,

Please stop putting paint thinner in your gas tank, that is all.

Thanks,

They also sell a hand pump with tubing that attaches right to their style sample bottle so you can take a sample without changing the oil. Then if the sample comes back with the TBN saying it is good for another 5000 miles you have saved the cost of an oil change
