Mine has the same odor. Especially the first day of driving it, and currently if it has been run hard. Most brand new cars have a burning smell as the exhaust components heat-up initially. I think since the turbo creates so much heat, new engine components are "burning-in", and is normal for this kind of car. The "Heat Extraction Vent" on the hood is supposed to keep things cooler. Probably after a month or more of driving, the burnt smell should subside. I've found that this car does so many different "odd" items, that are indeed perfectly normal.

Are you guys following the break-in guidelines? Especially you taiwan...i've seen some posts about you pulling up to the light with civics and things. I'm thinking you might smell weird stuff if you drive the car really hard before break-in ends. Not only that though, most turbo cars smell like oil and are really hot after you drive them hard.

I've followed my break-in to the "Letter", and currently have about 1200 miles on the ODO. The exhaust had a really weird odor to it when I first got it - even on cold starts, but that was probably the Cat getting conditioned. When I get home, I always idle the car for 2 minutes+ and at least 1-minute anywhere else. The strange smells have definitely cut-down since Day 1. Anyone else have the same?

I am buying this car for its handling, since I can take any car and give it horsepower. If you just want some straight line stuff you are better to buy a base WRX and mod it some and still save money over the EVO or STI.
For what reason are you buying a car? If the Evo showing a possible 20 hp (which honestly is quite minimal) difference from what is expected, can turn you away from it, why would you think the STI is for you either. If you want 20 HP you are better off buying a Mustang than either of these rally cars. These cars are designed for the turns, and they just have a side benefit of having some nice hp too. On either car 20 hp can be gained without voiding any warranty or probably adding any parts.
They are both awesome cars, but to switch opinion so fast based on 20 hp indicates you are not really sure what you are looking for, or even if you want to get either of the cars.
Also you might wait for a test on the STI just to be sure it will indeed it will be the EVO butt kicking machine everyone is so sure of.
Thanks for the reply!

I am not sure you understood my concern. It is not the 20hp difference. The problem I see is if Subaru keeps everything constant between the STi and the WRX, the STi should put out around 234hp (Please correct me if I am wrong) So, the difference will be 54hp. I could use that from the stock car, as I do not plan on moding the car. If I wanted to go fast only in one direction I would have gotten a V8 mustang, not a 3 series. Where I come from we don't race 1/4 miles much.

I have been a member of this board for over a year, yes I know what I want, I want all wheel traction, both cars will give me that, I want power, both car will give me that as well. At this point, the STi looks better. The fact the Evo does not have AYC and ACD has bothered me. Now the power being down. I love the car but I am not married to it

Thanks,

All new Mitsubishis have that smell. Its undercoating, or cosmoline (I think its called). They spray the entire underbody of the car and they don't bother trying to miss the exhaust. It usually goes away after about 100 miles, but sometimes it takes longer - nothing to worry about. It is a hot, oily smoky smell.

Yea mine has the smell as well. It will go away after a little driving. It just needs to burn off.

silvrevo, don't consider selling the car just because of the seats. Get new seats if they're that uncomfortable. You could probably even throw some standard Lancer seats in there for comfort. Do anything but don't get rid of the car. It's too friggin cool.

I agree, you'll take a way bigger hit if you sell your car then if you just shell out a few hundred for some different seats.

With a factory turbo car, you dont have to worry about power, as it's easy to make more without much effort. The Evo and STI are of the same breed, with the EVO on the "Hardcore" end and the STI being more "day to day" liveable for most people.

EVO : Singleminded Performance Car

STI : More well rounded, but not as "sharp"

What can you really live with?

And about the power issue, if you've ever been on a road course ,with drivers being equal, it seems to take a 100bhp difference to see one car really pulling away from another car..............
