Intake question

Hey all,

I just recently bought a slightly used (~5000 miles) 2005 EB evo. The original owner had a K&N typhoon intake installed. It appears to be the only mod that was done. I come from the wrx camp so I know what intakes can do to maf readings. I have searched through the forums and the word is this is probably the worst intake available and can cause serious issues with the drivability of the car. So far the car seems to be running fine, but I dont want to take any chances.

So my question is: Should I try to find a stock intake, or buy a different aftermarket intake? If the answer is stock, where is the best place to get OEM parts like that? What does the complete stock intake consist of (including clamps, etc)?

Thanks

there is no shortage of morons on this board who would love your intake to go with thier new vta BOV. Just set up an even trade for a stock intake.

if not ...try the for sale/wanted forum

I would not mess with it unless you are experiencing drivability or idle problems. These cars all respond differently to each mod. Just cause some cars have had problems with the typhoon doesn't mean you will.

If it ain't broke - don't fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally had the K&N intake for a while. I had my evo reflashed with it on there. I took it off and went back to stock for a while....and wow...what a difference. I would either go back to stock.....or just purcahse the HKS intake. THe HKS intake..IMO....is the best one for the Evo. So if you are going to purchase something....just purchase the HKS and I promise you won't be disappointed.

You should have gotten the stock intake from the original owner. I'm sure he still has it. If that doesn't work, then try to trade someone the Typhoon for their stock intake + a little cash. Unfortunately, what Turbo-Ron and the few after him don't realize is that just because you THINK it's running Ok, it probably isn't. You would need to get dyno'd, or go to the track, or get logged, etc etc to find out exactly what's happening, and I'm not sure it's worth that hassle.

You could get the stock intake and know that you're running perfectly, then get ready to do real mods that actually give you power without worry.

Still typing in CAPS and giving bad advice. I wish the mods would do something about this...

The k&n is a smaller intake tube than the stock tube or any of the rest of the aftermarket tubes. It also has a piece welded on the inside of the tube to create the vortex effect going into the turbo to produce better flow. The problem is, the fact that are twin scroll reverse tubo spools in a different direction...(I beleive counter clockwise,,,and the intake creates the vortex in a clockwise direction)..therefore, the air is fighting against itself as it is being taken in by the turbo. Trust me. for fun I put that intake back in...and you realize how much power and tourque you loose on the top end. It stops pulling after about 4500 rpms. It doesn't feel as strong.

This is just my personal opinion and from having to deal with that crappy intake.

This is just FYI because I dont really care what you do.

I had a Buschur Racing intake on the car for awhile. I did it only for the sound of the turbo and DV. I loved it even if it was a rice mod. However after awile I started to notice things that weren't quite right. The car drove great in 1st-4th gears but while partial throttle boosting in 5th I would get misfires. I also noticed my mileage dropped from 26 to 24 on the freeway at 75. I decided to put my stock intake back on and surprizingly the car did feel like it actually picked up HP with the stock intake. The stock intake also fixed the misfiring problem in taller gears. My mileage is back to 26 as well.

If you love the sound keep it. If you want a perfectly running EVO with the best performance possible get a stock air box.

get rid of it, and the cheapest way to go is with a stock unit.

Yeah I would have gotten that stocker but I bought it off of a dealership. They didnt have the stock peice. I also didn't know this intake was regarded so poorly. I bought the car without doing some proper research.

Ah well, I am now in the market for a stock intake. Can someone tell me how many parts/peices I need to completely change back to stock, or point me to a diagram of the stock intake?

Thanks for your help.

1) Stock airbox w/lid
2) Stock intake snorkel (attaches to front of engine bay and slips into the airbox)
3) MAF pipe (plastic pipe that goes from the turbo to airbox - need 2 t-bolt clamps)
4) Vaccuum line that goes from a small nipple in the middle of the MAF pipe to the stock boost control solenoid. This line is actually part of the stock boost/vaccuum lines, and I'm not sure if it's hanging around in your engine bay or not.

Get it tuned at a reputable shop, maybe even dynoed. Choose one with some experience in evos and ask them if it should be replaced or kept.

I've found that most (intake) threads/questions in this forum end with some trying to help, and then an all out war. You can end up more confused.

Maybe you can post asking others to suggest experienced shops in your area. But I still think you should let a local expert test and advise.
