I slept through the hurricane Orlando got cold but I've heard down south a lot of people are and will be without power for a while. I also hear they have water shortages in some areas down there.

You guys in S Florida our in my prayers. I hope you guys have a quick recovery.

I've experienced all that crap when Ivan hit us here in Pensacola last year. Not having power for 2-3wks, city curfew, contaminated water, using a gas grill to cook food, having to get bottled water from the Red Cross, stand in line every other day for ice from FEMA, road debris, traffic because of non operational street lights, waiting in gas lines for over an hour, etc.

Good luck to all affected.

Anyone hear anything about Cape Coral. My dad lives there, and I haven't heard from him since a day before the storm hit. Anyone in that area or near, I can PM an address.

My classes were cancelled for the week because my university doesn't have power. I hear WPB is pretty messed up, I haven't been back since it hit. Lynn is out until further notice also.

On a positive note, the hurricane brought in one hell of a cold front, which makes my car rip.

Ok, I work for the Naples Daily News and I've been covering the hurricane extensively as you can imagine (15 hour days!). I went up in a helicopter on Tuesday, day after the storm to shoot everything from Bonita Beach south to Chocoloskee/Everglades City/Goodland, etc....if you're north of Bonita Beach, there's VERY little damage. Winds got up to maybe 65mph for a short period of time. Naples is a mess, mostly tree damage, broken water mains. Much of the city is without power OR water. I live in N. Naples and all the trees in my backyard are down (big Australian pines mostly). As for Goodland, Isle of Capri, Marco, Everglades City, Chocoloskee, they actually made out VERY well considering. Weaker structures like mobil homes have damage, some are a complete loss. Very few though. Very few homes have extensive physical damage but there are a few. One home burned to the ground on Goodland due to a generator fire. The owners were home so it probably wasn't your house.

Miami's big concern is power. It'll take three weeks in some places to get power back. It looks as though their population did not prepare in general as no one had water or food. Not very smart. They really got whalloped when not expecting it as it turned back into a Cat3 when the eyewall hit the east coast. Traffic is a MESS. IMHO, I'd delay your trip down here. It'll be a bit before phone, electric, cable, water, etc...is back up to normal.

Here's a link to pictures taken by the photo staff and a bunch of hacks which they put in with the staff photographer's galleries:

There are a few aerial shots in there including the fire on Goodland that I shot from the air.

On a good note, Starbucks opened yesterday. Line was around the building. Today it was only half as long and I was able to get my first cup of Joe! It's always the little things. Oh yeah...cold showers SUCK!

I just got power back today, almost a week after it went out. We are pretty lucky, alot of people still dont have any. Getting gas is still a total nightmare, lines for gas stations are literally miles long, because only a very small amount have power so the ones open are overwhelmed to say the least. Our water is no longer contaminated, but alot of areas still are. I took my first hot shower today after 3 cold ones this week, it felt AMAZING. Cold showers SUCK!!!!! Almost painful. I need to go buy some food to restock the fridge, and I can actually cook now, good luck to everyone still without power, I hope it comes on real soon for you guys, I know how much it really sucks especially since Florida, unlike the North, doesnt use gas for ovens or hot water, so when the power is out, you have literally nothing working at all, and if you actually have running water your lucky cause alot still dont.
