I've driven both and I would prefer ABS, but it doesn't seem to be an issue in the RS. I use mine as a daily driver and have over 16000 miles. The car stops so well that you would would really have to screw up for it to be a problem. I think the all wheel drive helps keep all the wheels rolling also. This doesn't include racing or higher speeds on slick surfaces. Coincidentally I was recently rear ended in my wife's car by a guy who blamed it on the ABS. He braked as hard as he could but since the wheels didn't lock up he rolled right into me. I've experienced this effect before and it is a little scary. ABS on dry surfaces just gives you the ability to steer away if you can. You usually won't stop any quicker.

ABS is safer period. In an emergency your brain wont work as fast as ABS in order to pump the brakes vs. nail them hard. If your a great driver, this is less of an issue of course but personally I think ABS is worth its weight so to speak unless its a weekend / track car.

The Viper lacked ABS for a while, customer complained, Dodge added it. Bottom line is ABS brakes better for a larger percentage of road conditions, no argument about it. But for hardcore track machine you dont need it. Where you going to drive it?

if you are a really good driver then you should be able to adapt to the car you are driving and learn its limits. I prefer no abs because i don't trust a electronic braking system between me and whatever is on coming.

ABS no. I think I would like to have EBD. I've had the brakes act funny at extremely high speeds. I'm wondering is EBD would help high speed braking stability.

Also , I have locked the brakes diving into corners really hot and braking late.

ABS takes longer to break actaully. I don't have ABS in my jeep, and i've locked the tires a couple times. If you get a lot of snow or rain, or drive on loose gravel roads, get ABS (in any car) if you can. I locked my breaks on gravel in california when I didn't know my lane HAD to turn right, and there was a car next to me, I slammed on the breaks to make the turn without rolling, and locked them, overshot my turn and went about half way into the left turn lane, no car was there luckily, but there was one comming down the road and most people turn left there, phew!

can someone install ABS on a RS? i ve heard that you can install a selection switch for the system to activate.

How much you think it would cost to install an abs system on the RS?

True ABS does take longer to brake. ABS is a safety system designed to allow one to make emergency steering changes under braking. However there is absolutely no hard proof that ABS has to date saved any lives. My girl's old car had ABS, but it did little to help when she came upon a snow and ice slicked road. In spite of her best efforts she ended up crossing the center line and facing oncoming traffic. Fortunately nothing came of it.

Good driving skills largely negate the need for ABS IMO.

WRONG!!!!! An ABS equiped car will brake shorter than a non equipped ABS car and still be able to steer while doing it. The reason people "think" ABS takes longer is because they are used to locking up their tires. But when you lock your tires you're actually sliding, when ABS is activated, its making the tires perform at their peak treshold, that being right before it starts to slide. My advice is if you have an ABS equiped car, is to go to a parking lot and activate it many times so you get a feel for what it's like, because most drivers under panic situations actually let go their brakes becasue the pulsing from the ABS makes them think their brakes are faulty.

Yeah, abs brakes better. they will lock dont forget, then unlock in milliseconds maximizing the potential of the cars brakes and tires and traction.

Good drivers might not need abs but in the rain they will

I dont miss abs. But I havent driven an evo with abs either, so I really wouldnt know. As long as your not a jack-a** with your left foot or throw it in netual when braking hard ( I've seen it happen) you should be ok.

RS would make a great track-only car

but I don't have a money tree in the backyard

Moving to a place with a real track next year; and, hope to get a track dedicated car.... less expensive than an RS though

My previous cars did not have ABS and I really wanted it in my evo. Previously I have locked my brakes numerous times, most of them intentional(or expecting it to lock soon) and fun, others unintentional and scary.

I am not a pro driver and I drive my car on a daily basis. The brembo brakes are awesome, combined with the stiff chassis, and sticky tires. It gets even better with ABS. I love the fact that I can hit my brakes as hard as I want, consistently without flat-spotting my sticky Yoks.

My car is still new and despite my minimal miles I have felt ABS activate numerous times. In the autocross it is great to have especially if you are a non-pro like myself and enter a corner a bit sideways and have to press brakes at the same time. I know it is better to press brakes in a straight line but not all of us are gifted enough to consistently position the car to brake in a straight line. Trying to slow down a car mid corner, preparing for the next turn, as fast as possible without ABS is pretty difficult unless you like a lot of tire smoke.

To me the Evo is a great car and a lot has to do with technology. There are many cars that have a lot more power then the evo yet in a track their would be no competition. It is becasue the Evo uses these electronics to put power down, control the engine, and slow the car down. I love all evos and am not trying to put down any car, but taking out EBD ABS is like removing one of the weapons of a gladiator. It will still put up a good fight, but it loses that one advantage.
