I found that the traction level is not the only factor. Behaviour of the Advans also changes with temp I found. That is, in cold, once the tire starts to slide, it will keep on sliding until you are almost at a stop (like a hockey puck) whereas non-performance/or other tires will eventually regain grip and give you an opportunity to regain control. So keep that in mind too.

Makaveli, life lesson learned! it sucks and its the hardest way to learn, but the key is that you learned something! you seem like a smart guy and i'm glad you have a conscience and was more worried about your passenger, not alot of people out there like that! don't beat yourself up over the accident, you both walked away and in the end thats what counts. good luck with everything and don't forget, everything happens for a reason!

I'm glad you made it out safe, and this is definately a reality wake up call for me to swap my tires and slow down.

right, that also applies. basically the sliding friction coefficient of these tires in the cold is a LOT less than standard ones due to the compound. so they become very upredictable.

this is also similar to racing slicks that will have high grip until a certain max slip angle value, which, when exceeded, make the grip drop off drastically without much warning. compared to street tires which will have a plateau on the "slip angle vs grip" curve at the peak slip angle and then drop off gradually, giving the driver time to figure out wtf is going on and react.

At least you and your passenger are both ok, that's the most important thing!

Advans are some of the best tires ever made and he said that he was speeding so who knows if it was the Advans at fault. Don't get me wrong I'm sure they played a factor but knowing you and your cars limits is the real fault here. Thank god you didn;t hurt your friend because I have been there.

I would not feel safe on my advans if the temp. was less than 35 degrees. Last night in Philly it was 25 degrees. No way would I want to take any off ramps on the advans on a 25 degree night.

Hey everybody. Those in the northeast I think need to be careful because we had a drastic drop in Temp. It was in the 70's on Wednesday and it was down in the 20's on thursday (the day of my wreck.)

Regardless though, I took the turn that I lost it on way too fast. Period. Advans, or not, cold or not. I over drove the car and someone else nearly paid for it. It would have been the simplest thing in the world to just slow down to 25mph over the crest and uneventfully driven over like my grandmother.

With that said, I can't say enough about the safety of this car. I will have pics up soon, but you will see how bad the exterior of the car looked but also at the sametime, how in one piece the interior is.

First off, it's good to hear that you and your passenger made it out just fine. I don't enjoy reading about fatalities over the internet. In all honestly, this is a 50/50 situation, where yes, you may have overestimated what can be done with the car, but at the same time ALOT of other people would have done the same. Point is though, you came away alive and the car can be replaced.

Secondly, wow, where is the flaming? I'm utterly impressed by the maturity currently being exhibited by everyone. Let's not let Warralton find out about this thread.
