Evo IX vs 06 Sti Trim Level - Quality
Evo IX vs 06 Sti Trim Level - Quality
This post is strictly directed towards Evo owners who, for whatever reasons, were convinced, told, or sold the idea that somehow the Evo had lesser trim and quality than the Sti.
I decided to go check out the 06 Sti's having just visited a Mits dealer that had an 06 GSR and an MR (WOW - OMG do I want one now!!!!!)) on the lot/floor.
I thought that I was going to be jealous, envoius, or somehow shamed at the quality of the Evo compared to the new Sti.
Wow, nothing could be further from the truth. I want to give Subies the credit that they deserve which is a bunch, but speaking here strictly to the trim levels, The GSR is nicer and the MR is MUCH nicer.
The only trim weakness that I will concede is the Evo's main guage cluster. Still looks like see-though cardboard as we know all to well, but after that, the feel of the Evo's creature comforts out classes the Sti's that I saw. I was told that there was only 1 trim level for the Sti but I still have to check that out.
My original curiousities were fueled by the Xray technician who, while he was Xraying me for injuries from my Evo getting hit, told me that the 06 Sti had new suspension and won the Car & Driver or Road & Track (I forget which) article / face-off of the Evo's and Sti's handling.
That night at the hospital was really hilaroius, He found out that I had been in a wreck in an Evo and told me theat he was trying to decide which car to buy. There I was being brought in on a back-board and in a neckbrace telling him how to do a Cam swap and Hotside upgrade on an 03-04 to get the power up. The crew around us thought we were both nuts. I guess we probably were. It was funny when my friend picked me up from the emergency room with my son. There was the Xray Tech agonizing over which car to get asking me questions about the Evo. They just looked at me, laughed and shook their heads cause they knew I was more concerned about the car than the hospital visit.
So anyway:
Thow in all the serious new perks on the IX and I'm even more convinced about the IX.
I wouldn't have originally bought the Evo based on any creature comforts, and I am a fan of the raw driving experience that the Evo offers . . .
But We ain't Missin' Out On Anything :-)

The Road and track put the Evo first in all catigories. Even in the straits.
I do agree with you Mitsu actually listend to consumers. The Evo interior is by far the most apealing

I have had both, and I think the STi uses just as cheap materials as the Evo, I mean all the plastics are easily scratched by just your finger nails. The STi seems better because of the higher sound proofing. It seems more solid, the Evo feels light and thinly made, and this might make it seem cheaper. I do love the evo dash design, very simple and honest, I'm afraid that its the last of the old school Japanese designs if the spy pics of the X is an indication. I will say that the STi has a better instrument panel hands down.
At first glance the Subarus have a higher level of fit and finish. It has a tasteful interior and sexy looking gauges. Am I jealous? Not really.
As mentioned, the Evo is all about the business of driving quickly and being one with the road. Creature comforts are for old ladies anyway.

Definitely! I'm even saying that the MR is Much nicer. The carbon fiber dresses things up a bit as well.
It's just that I have "accepted" it up till now. Neither one is a Bentley :-) but I truthfully prefer the Evo's trim if I have to take one or the other.
I do wich someone could come up with a cool swap-out main cluster, that would absolutley kill in the aftermarket in my opinion.

Sti seats were inferior
boost gauge was (yawn) too small - so just no advatage there.
the rest was like Chevy to Ford - different look, but nothing that you can really point out
(yes, except the main gauge cluster, Sti has it there)
Where the Evos grill is metal, the Sti is plastic, which really turned me off.
The Evo's approach to the interior in simple, sport sedan fare. I get their point and accept it. Better would be nice, but I'll put money under the hood first.
remember I'm just addressing a misconception that I feel exists out there.
:-)
Im pretty sure inteior wise only diff between mr and gsr, is a little badge that says mr and the shift knob. I could be wrong.
The subaru have much nice interiors than lancer/evo. It may be the same cheap plastics but just the way its set up. Doesnt the sti also have auto climate control. Cause i know when i change from hot to cold in my lancer i feel like im pysicaly like moving huge parts in the car haha.
