Umm... I don't really know, to be honest. I do it on public roads so things get a little busy when the needle goes that far.

But I've had experience where the stock speedo (and odometer, to a lesser degree) is off. The speedo seems to be more erroneous at higher speeds.

I've certainly found my (sold) DC5 reading about 5-7kph higher than my dad's Jaguar. Both on stock wheels and tyres at around 140kph.

As far as taking my car to this sort of speed on public roads, I'd appreciate it if people don't try to lecture me about it. I do it very late at night on a well lit, straight section of road. And yes, I know that if anything goes wrong, they will be picking me up with cotton swabs.

I'm dubious on accounts of top speed when people claim going over the speedometer, unless in a cannonball run against top end Ferrari or Lambo and especially going down a slope. People can make up all sorts of guesswork figure. More than likely, the powerband starts to flatline because of the gear ratio.

It's like in HS. You would hear all sorts of sordid party stories. The vast majority are fake claims with little truth blending to make a good story, propping up brownies points for the masses.

Well, you can work out the approx. speed from the gear ratio and rpm, surely? So if your evo can get there, the highest speed is top gear and max rpm.

If the claim is like say 220mph, then he's prolly going around 7000/170 x 220 = 9058rpm (numbers are approx.). Some evo engines can go that far but few can do it for a sustained period. It would require serious work and money to raise the rev limit by that far a get any kind of reliability out of it. So if the guy only has a TBE, EMS, or even a larger turbo, I wouldn't think it is achievable.

My point is that you can sort of check whether people's claims are plausible...

Speedo pinned is wrong.. Its off by about 10mph, GPS indicated speed is just about 160 with the stock rev limiter and stock large wing (wing adds stability, but eats horsepower by adding downforce)

Gearing is a big factor if you want to go faster even at 9000rpm (which won't hold up very long unless the engine is built and tuned for it)

I definitely suggest the stock large spoiler and a splitter on the front for downforce at high speeds, I definitely would give up top speed for a bit of additional stability.. Most tracks you'd never see much higher than 160 though since you'd probably never hit that on the long straights at many tracks..

Is the wing eatting horsepower or creating drag? Only thing I can think of that would "eat" hp is drivetrain. Sorry if I'm looking too deep into your comment.

Ya know, he didn't make any indication that this was done legally or Illegally anywhere just a question.. There are some places where this can be tested perfectly legally, even a few public roads where there are no posted speed limits.. Though I'd hate to roll over at 160 in the middle of a deserted road..

Not to give you a hard time, because I know where this thread is going as well...

Well.. you read a little deeply into it, I didn't want to elaborate too much into it.. Technically drag requires horsepower to overcome, so its technically correct in either referrence..

Anything that creates downforce will cause drag.

MalibuJack, ever tried it with the wing mirrors folded? I wonder if there'll be any difference. They look like they are draggy.

I believe that the lowering your car also helps top speed. So this might help if you want to go really fast....
