Extended freeway driving?

I've got a question for anyone who has a good answer ....

At least once a month (sometimes more) I drive 600 miles of freeway at a pretty consistent 80mph. As we know this is a 4 cylinder engine so my rev's are around 3,400-3,600 at 80mph. My drive takes about 4-5 hours. Is this consistent high-revving bad for the engine? I know its meant to drive at high rpms for track use, but is it okay to sit at 3,500 rpm for like a solid hour?

3500 rpms is pretty low. The car should do just fine.

Think of all the gas you would save if you had a 6th (or 7th in the case of the MR) that was strictly a 75+mph cruise gear.

80mph at 2750rpm would be dope =)

I have already done two 1600 mile trips and everything is great. Don't worry about it, it's a car it's meant to be driven.

Math is not your friend? 600 miles in 4 hours would be 150 mph, 600 miles in 5 hours would be 120 mph.... so how far are you actually driving?

The other evo's with a 6th gear top out pretty much at the same revs the 5 gear evo's do. The top gear ratios are almost the same for both 5 and 6 gear evos.

Top gear in the MR is about 8.5% taller than top gear in the others. 1st through 4th are almost identical for the MR and others. Top gear in the 5-speed Evos is about halfway between 5th and 6th in the MR. See the graph below.

Perhaps that is true for the IX, but for the VIII the MR 6th gear has virtually the same mph at 3000 RPM as the non-MR's in 5th gear. The MR's 5th gear split the huge gap we had between our 4th and 5th on the 5 speeds.
