Retrofit 03 HID projector into 06 non-SSL?

Does anyone know how difficult a process taking the HID projector out of an '03 headlight and sticking them into an '06 non-SSL headlight would be?

Is it simple plug and play or is there a lot of modification that needs to be done? Am I better off just buying SSL/JDM headlights?

Thanks for the info.

Not that hard if you know what you're doing. Hidplanet.com is your friend when it comes to projector retrofits. It can be a bit time consuming if it's your first time though. If you have the '03 headlight, why not just black it out and stick it in? It's probably less work than transplanting the projector. You'll get better results too when it comes to alignment.

I don't know why you would want to do that. I mean, all you need is the HID bulb/ballast. The IX still has projectors.

i agree with 600rr, also because the factory hid housing has motors in it for the adjustable lights, which i don't think you'll be able to use. just buy some good hid bulbs and ballasts.

Hid projectors focus light differently than halogen projectors due to a different focal point. Also, OEM ballasts/bulbs are far superior to aftermarket ones. Although I think the cutoff with an aftermarket hid kit on the non-ssl headlight is ok with the Evo. Some cars don't take too well to aftermarket hid kits, even with projectors e.g. acura integra.

I got the phillips 4300k HIDs on my car, It looks awesome but it' has a yellow spot on both sides due to the way the projectors are made. Kinda lame, but from inside the car it was night vs. day. The cutoff line was not as good as my 03 evo, or my eclipse with audi projectors.

i dont think they are using different projectors, from the non-ssl to the SSL, only difference should be the lbulbs used, for the non-SSL i would say its an h7, which a d2s(hid) bulbs wil lfit into and vice-versa

I noticed on all 9's , mitsu cut a piece off the bottom of the projector lense. If you look, you'll see it. That might be why it's a bit blue, or has that yellow shining through? I looked inside the projectors also, and there's nothing else in there. The metal piece used for the cutoff line looks different from my 03 with HIDs.

I'm not sure if I understood correctly:

If I have non HID EVO (such as non SSL package EVO 9), to get HID (like an EVO 8) all I have to do is take out the projector bulb and install an HID bulb and everything works? If that is the case, why did they skimp the few dollars for different bulbs? I must not be understing the upgrading procedure....

Agreed. I would try to get 03 headlights. Nobody uses the motors anyway.

no,

the whole houseing is different(alike but different), you would need hid bulbs and ballast(ballast being the more expensive piece) its an upgrade thats all- i dont have the ssl- dont need it either..

This has been discussed already in this thread....thread

The lens that the bulb shines through to ouput light is different from a car with HID to a car without HID.

You can get rebased bulbs in the 9006 form that will work, but they are all aftermarket and typically of very low quality (at least 95% of them). OEM Philips and Osram D2S bulbs are of much higher quality. OEM ballasts are also far superior to aftermarket ballasts. That's why Mitsu doesn't skimp and provide you with aftermarket rebased HID kits... no OEM manufacturer sells them.

reason why i don't want to use 03-05 evo headlights is cuz i love my 06 headlights (gunmetal housing). and i don't plan on doing a DIY blacked out mod on a 30k car's headlights.

yes the projectors for halogen are different than hid's.

and i don't want to get an aftermarket kit not simply b/c of the "cut-off," but mainly b/c i don't want that retarded 2 hot-spots, instead of the nice even disbursement of light when you have oem hid's.

So, in essence, could you just pick up a set of OEM bulbs, balasts, and plug everything in, from Mitsubishi?

I have an 05 GSR and this was one of the projects I was going to get into at a later date. I want to get all the P/N's associated with getting a factory HID option. I just don't know off hand what all P/N's come with the HID option.
