2-step/ no 2-step?

Ok, I am only starting this thread because I think it will help many others. I took Warrtalons advice and compared my 2-step method vs. his launching method.

I use the AEM and 2-step building boost around 14psi coming off the line, but I have had issues in the front with wheel hop. I have since installed a coil over suspension(set to stiff), dropped the car about 2 1/2-3 inches, and installed the Ingalls stiffy(set to stiff). I still have wheel hop with all this added.

On pump gas my car has 368whp 348trq @ 21-22 psi and stock 03 turbo.

I have an Exedy triple carbon clutch, Rota torque rims, and Advan Neova's in 245/40/17. Tire pressure is around 35-38psi.

After doing some launches last night on wet pavement and hearing how Warrtalon launches I decided what the heck, try it the way he does it.

I only did this on wet pavement to hopefully spin the tires instead of allowing them to hop and damage something.

So I first tried to launch my usual way using the 2-step and 14 psi:

First try, I slip the clutch a little and hammer it, wheel hop bad, and let off. Wet pavement didn't help a bit.

Second try same thing. Wheel hop again! The roads were very wet also.

I decided to try and launch without the 2-step the way Warrtalon described and....

First try, I raise the rpms up to about 7000rpms and do a quick slip. The car wheel hop for about a second and then just started spinning all 4 tires. Much better!

Second try, I raise the rpms up to about 6000-6300rpms and do a quick slip. The car lurched forward about a foot and launched like a beast. It spun all 4 tires while pulling hard, no wheel hop at all, and it felt very smooth. Almost too smooth.

Third try, I raise the rpms to 5500 rpms, do a quick slip, and the car bogs.

Fourth try, I try the same rpm and same thing happened, BOG.

Fifth and final try, I bring the rpms back up to about 6000-6300rpms and do a quick slip, the car rolls forward MAYBE a foot, and all 4 tires start spinning and the car launches like a beast again. No wheel hop at all. EVEN ON WET PAVEMENT IT LAUNCHED VERY WELL!

So when it stops raining I will try this on dry pavement just to make sure it won't bog, but I have a feeling this method is better FOR ME than the 2-step at this point. I hope If anything I might have to raise the rpms a few hundred to compensate for dry ground.

With the 2-step I would have to slip the clutch anywhere from 5-8 feet before unleashing all hell and it would still wheel hop bad even slipping it that much. Warrtalon's way for some reason doesn't wheel hop and starts unleashing the power of the car IMMEDIATELY with no hesitation.

I only went to the track twice since buying the car a few months ago and I could only manage 2-1.7's and 7-1.8's WITH WHEEL HOP and slipping it 5-8 feet out of the hole while using 2-step.

I hope this helps others because I know it helped me, I THINK. Obviously I won't be able to tell until I get to a track and see what my 60ft shows. It feels much better though.

yeah true..to get a proper result you would need to test that at the track.

honestly....coilovers arent the best when it comes to drag racing imo.
i've got a set and mine as well as every other car that I've been with them feels bouncy at times.

i'm gonna be switching back to my tein drop springs for sure.

I must be launching the right way every time, cause i NEVER have wheel hop? I brake all 4 loose EVERY time in 1st and most of the time in 2nd. You gotta slip the clutch till all the wheels are rolling, then dump it the rest of the way. Dynoflash 2 stage with 350whp.... Simply AMAZING.... everytime....period.

5500rpm and up i will pull 1.8-1.7 60' times consistantly with alot of wheel spin. tried at 5000 rpm and very little wheel spin pulled 2 1.6 60' times. this is with droping the clutch evertime. i have never had wheel hop but i also dont have the 2 step.

5500rpm was the ticket for me, but I tend to ride the clutch too long and I'm going to try letting the slack out and dumping it my next try at the track.

Update!

I had Doug from TopSpeed take a ride with me and see my launching technique. Well wouldn't you know, I was doing it wrong.

I had problems with the wheel hop because I was slipping it too much. It was kind of funny because after I launched the first time he said "have you tried dumping it".

I thought the wheel hop was from not slipping it enough, but it was the complete opposite.

I then used the 2-step and did a quick slip followed by dumping it. WOW! Shot out of the hole like a rocket spinning all 4 tires. 100% better. So I tried it 3 more times and the same thing.

When I say quick slip I mean you are literally only rolling the car forward maybe an inch or two. Yes that fast! Just enough to get the wheels to start turning the then BAM! All hell breaks loose.

2-step is the way to goooooooo!

I plan on doing some 6k 2-step launches next weekend as long as it doesn't rain, even if I have to drive 250 miles. It will be my first time launching at the track with the Dynoflash 2-step. It will also be my first time on alky and with the other stuff recently installed...

With wheel hop and feathering the clutch I still managed (2) 1.7 60ft and a bunch of 1.8's.

Just by the way it launches now and not having wheel hop, I think a 1.6 is near. The car hauls *** from the git, no more hesitation while trying to overcome the wheel hop.
