Question Exhaust systems made especially for the IX...

I have read a lot of stuff on here about various exhaust systems being compatible with the IX with slight modifications because of the O2 sensor being relocated or the piping being too large and having to remove a heat shield or something (Buschur said it). What I didn't hear about was if any exhausts are available that are made specifically for the Evo IX (or even MR). Does anyone know of any? I know Milltek makes one, but I'm not sure if it fits with the older US bumper (probably). Unfortunately, it would probably cost more than some titanium systems to get over here if my guess is right.

Sorry for making yet another IX exhaust thread, but I didn't see this specific issue addressed in the other ones and I'm new to this scene. I read that a lot of existing pieces are still compatible before the cat-back section, though.

PS: What are some exhausts that still make good gains but are relatively quiet compared to say a Greddy setup? I've got nothing against a great sounding system, I just don't want a bunch of attention from something that is too loud while cruising or that drones or something. I know, the price you pay for performance, but I figure it's worth asking about.

Milltek exhaust (I love the Euro/JP rear end):

This is a good topic. People are buying new cars and want the products to fit without having to alter anything. It seems no company has yet to make an Evo IX-specific exhaust. Currently, all the ones that fit the VIII physically fit the IX with the issues you've mentioned.

In doing research, the main problems of actual fitment stem from the dp. I believe most companies have yet to release an Evo IX exhaust simply because the VIII systems do "fit". The first company that releases an actual IX TBE that clears the dp and has the O2 sensor in the correct position will get a good jump on the competition. I believe Megan is the only one in the process of developing one.

The EVO9 exhaust system is not much different than the EVO8's. The downpipes are identical, nothing needs to be changed in that area. The 02 sensor on the EVO9 is placed in the center of the cat. The wires for the 02 sensor have been extended by Mitsubishi to reach this far. We've installed/sold about 25 EVO9 systems already and we put the 02 bung in the same place as the EVO8. This has worked perfectly as the wires reach without a problem. It is only about 10" and the wires, as I said, are extra long from the factory.

If you leave the stock cat in place then there is no issue with the 02 sensor at all.

The catback system is also exactly the same. The carrier bearing has had a heat shield on it from the factory now. No idea why Mitsubishi added this, it is honestly rediculous. Anyway, IF you keep the stock downpipe/cat in place then this heat shield and the two studs have to be removed for a full 3" pipe to go next to it. I have heard from a few customers/installers that IF you use our complete 3" turbo back then the heat shield does not have to be removed and it the turbo back fits perfectly. We have installed just our downpipes/catback so far on the EVO9's as they have been all BR330/350 Edition cars and keep the stock cat.

There are a few EVO9 owners here with our turbo back, maybe they can chime in on this.

Thanks,

Yeah, it seems like most companies are thinking that it's not really worth it as people can adapt the VIII systems to fit without major hassle.

Dave, is the exhaust manifold and the o2 housing on the IX identical to the VIII? I'm thinking of getting both item port and coated by you guys and wonder whats the availability on them and turnaround time.

Kevo (Kevin, right?), they are identical on the IX, and turnaround time is immediate, because they have pre-ported/pre-coated stock o2/mani parts waiting for your cores to arrive. They ship back to you the same day. Read my thread for my review:

It's a Warrtalon Xmas Part 2 - Buschur Porting & Coating

I asked Dave the same question you did about the VIII vs IX parts, and he confirmed that they are the same.

Thanks Warr, I've read your thread, nice gain. The reason I ask because I have a EVO VIII manifold sitting around and might just sent that to Dave if all the specs on both are the same, then I can just swap it in when my 9 come in. I think I met you before at DC Solo2 Divisional. I was running in SM with a 03 white EVO and I think you are running in AS. Hope to see you more often at autox.

Be sure to call before you send in your parts for coating/porting. They are the same but we are having a very hard time keeping parts done on the shelf. You will also need a RA# to send it in.
