ok money is tight and im leaning towards an 06 RS or GSR but i found an 03 evo 8 and the price is really good....

thing is the car has a salvage title.... now b4 you say run like hell heres what happened....

(or at least what the owner says)

according to the owner (a female btw) the car was her boyfriends, except that it was in her name cause he had bad credit.... well they had a nasty breakup and the bf didnt want to give the car back.... well after alot of fighting and getting the police involded she got the car back but not before the ex staged a fake theft of the car.... (which he got arrested for)

when she got the car back her ex had stripped it of:

1.front and rear seats
2.steering wheel
3.wheels
4.broke all the windows
5.stereo
6.front bumper
7.intercooler
8.wing


needless to say the car was a total loss not to mention theft recovery...

make a long story short, her new bf along with a fat insurance check found new parts (from ebay and salvage yards) brought the car back to life.... shes been driving it for about 6 months but cant afford the payments so all she wants is the payoff which is just under $17k

what do you guys think?

she has all the reciepts and pics of the damage (the car wasnt crashed just stripped of its goodies) the main thing is the "salvage status" but the price aint bad you know....

don't do it, first off, just b/c the car is running you don't know what kind or condition the parts are put back into it, especially any engine/electrical parts installed. Also, I know from past experience that it is a pain in the *** to insure a car with a salvage title(at least in Illinois) You have to have certain inspections and stuff by insurance companies to make sure that the car is insurable and this process isn't free. If it stays as a salvage title in some states than you can't insure and then it is basically an off road vehicle only. Just from my experience, stay away from sales with prices that are too good to be true. The last thing you want is to end up with a car that you have to put even more money back into. I think if you look around you can find 03's for around $22-23K. That isn't much more than $17K

 

damn, you ask a good question...ask yourself this before you jump on this

1. is she telling the truth?
2. will you ride this car into the ground (the salvage title means its resale is near impossible, so you would make this a car you ride into the ground)
3. if you sell your ralliart and get her to sell it at 16, you damn near have an even trade
4. how bad do you want an evo? are you willing to take the risk?
5. are you financially stable enough to handle maintenance on this high end car?
6. the 03s tend to have many problems, salvage or not, can you afford any potential problems with your current financial situation?


if everything pans out ok after you ask yourself those questions, i would say go for it, its an incredible machine

 

but then again, after reading what other people say, i dont know, you gotta do more hw on this

This is a good idea, if you sell your ralliart or use it as a trade in at a dealer and talk down the price on the evo, you probably would have to finance next to nothing unless you could come up with a couple $$. I would stay away from this deal

 

Offer $10k in cash or walk away.

You could get a well cared for 03 Evo for not much if any more than $17k...

 

Like everyone said. Only buy it if you can afford to fix it if issues come up. If you ever plan on tradeing this car in dont buy it. You will never get any money for a car with that title. For a few grand more you can get a car with a clean title. Is it really worth the trouble the car may bring????

 

extremely important points. Maintenance costs are the same whether you paid $35k or $16k for the car... except probably more for a $16k one with questionable history Honestly if money is tight, I wouldn't do it. It's the hardest thing in the world to pass up a seemingly good deal on a dream when it's just not right, but will be more worth it. If it were a fix-me-up house that could only go up in value, I'd say do it... but that car is only going to go down and (as mentioned above) be unsellable. Yeah, I'm old

 

id stay away as well, stories like that are hard to follow, i dont trust it

 

ya after thinking about it you guys are correct, even a used evo worries me, as these cars are rode hard and put away wet.... i'm gonna set my goals on a new one.

 

I don't think you can get a standard auto loan from most banks for a salvage titled car. Just FYI

I also don't think 17k is that great of a deal for a salvage titled car.
