There's a lot to be said about the Cayman, but i think the main thing it has going for it according to a number of magazines is that it handles really well. I've never been in a move Cayman, but have driven two 911 turbos in its various incarnations (996 and something else, 993?)
It concerns me when people say that things handle well, cos I think it's highly dependent on the person who says it and the meaning it implies. There are cars out there that are really good fun to drive (Miata's, MGF's, Elise's for example) and while they're fun, it doesn't translate to high cornering speed. Drifting is fun and enterrtaining, but there are faster ways around a corner. The Evo isn't really famous for its handling finess (not saying it's bad, but there are others better) but the lap times speak for themselves.
So if it's entertainment value you're after (a choice which I do not disrespect) then the Cayman's great. But outright speed and lap times, I would be mightyly surprised if it comes anywhere close to the 911 Personally, I love the way it looks, but I've wanted a 911 (997 or whatever) since I was old enough to breathe so I'm saving up some more and skipping the Cayman.
p.s. From the magazines I've read, there have been no lap times posted. Can anyone point me towards one that has?
