Almost got munched today!!

I LOVE this EVO now.. Amazing save today.

So, I'm comming up to College on Trilby today, where there is a left turn lane, where there is room for about 15 cars in the left turn lane. The lane is just about cleared out, & there are still 15 or so cars in the straight lane.

Well, I cruize over into the left turn lane, moving about 35-40mph, & this idiot absolutely leaps into the lane in front of me... He pulled out of a veterinary office's parking lot, through a gap in the line of cars going straight, withought making sure the left lane didn't have anyone (ME) barreling through! He didn't even pause.. Just cut straight out & because of the line of cars, I didn't see him till he was about 1/2 way into my lane, with me no less than about 15 feet from jambing directly into his side.

I did an INSTANT 1/2 turn of the wheel to the left, & then instant 1/2 turn to the right, leaving me directly in the oncomming traffic lane, looking at a mini-van that was about 30 feet away comming right at me at around 30mph or so.. Then an instant 1/2 turn to the right, & back to the left again, leaving me directly on the other side of the idiot driver. I never touched the brakes.. I don't think I lost more than about 5 MPH during the manouver. It all happened in less than 1.5 seconds too.

If I had been in my Supra, I would have hit him.. No way I could have gotten out of it.. Same with the Lexus, & especially with the 4runner. But, I recall only hearing the slightest tire squeek come from the EVO tires, right at the first instant reaction. I doubt I missed the idiot's bumper by more than 6".

I hate when people say to buy a big car so you don't get as messed up in an accident, but my feelings are.. Get a car that will keep you out of an accident in the first place.

Go sign up with the SCCA people.. Get used to HANDLING your car's at the edge, & those reactions will be your friend in a tight situation.

yep back in october i was on the freeway and it had just rained, some idiot runs over a big *** piece of metal, i swerved to avoid it unfortunately it still smashed the driver's side of the bumper. but if i hadn't swerved it would have took out my headlight , front of the hood and possibly the intercooler. i was surprised i didn't lose control the way i yanked the wheel to the right and then back to the left again. awesome.

The quick handling of the Evo has saved it a couple of times for me. Once in a parking lot at a local shopping center, this lady in a mini-van pulled out right in front of me. I came up behind a car on the freeway and moved into the left lane to pass, only to see a chunk of 2x4 lying in the road. The last time it was a bear. I was cruising down the road at about 50, and all of a sudden I see this black thing out of the corner of my eye. It was a bear crossing the road at a dead sprint. If I hadn't swerved I would have caught it almost head on. As it was I barely clipped it. No scratches, just a small dent on the bottom of the driver side front door. So small I don't even notices sometimes, and I am pretty uptight about the appearance of my car.

Sometimes i have to be careful with my evo, because sometimes I'll brake late because I know i can, but then the people behind me are in cars that don't brake so quickly and I have to make efforts dodging them. in my rear view.

I LOVE this quote:

"Drivers of the tiny Jetta die at a rate of just forty-seven per million, which is in the same range as drivers of the five-thousand-pound Chevrolet Suburban and almost half that of popular S.U.V. models like the Ford Explorer or the GMC Jimmy. In a head-on crash, an Explorer or a Suburban would crush a Jetta or a Camry. But, clearly, the drivers of Camrys and Jettas are finding a way to avoid head-on crashes with Explorers and Suburbans. The benefits of being nimble--of being in an automobile that's capable of staying out of trouble--are in many cases greater than the benefits of being big."
