Hmm... I'm not going to lie. The EVO didnt impress me...

I had an opportunity to take a ride in a 300whp 05 "GSR." We went around the block with multiple WOT pulls. It felt very different from the 300whp STi I was in. When the STi hit, the turbo hitting was very noticeable, stuck you to your seat HARD, and PULLED very hard. The EVO on the other hand didnt feel the same. It did not feel like that STi at all. I talked with the owner afterward and he said that it is because the hp is top end, not like the Subaru's low end. Im looking for that initial pounding into the back of your seat at 20 mph on. The EVO seemed to be missing thatI know Subarus arent known for top end. It seems like I like the low end more.
Should I be more interested in the Subaru then because I am not interested in higher speed accelleration but lower speed?? Or maybe did the driver really not go WOT or pushed it? Will 300whp feel the same in the STi as in the EVO? If not, what will the difference be. Im not sure what I want now...Thanks!

So u will be happy with 300 whp? Get the STI in that case because Evos have more potential than 300 whp. On the other hand the STI has a lil potential left and it's game over. I would surmise a 300 whp STI and a 300 whp Evo would be a close race with the Stis tq keeping it a lil ahead. So if you have no aspirations of making huge power get the STi and prepare to get pummeled by 350+ whp Evos with bolt-ons at the track.

the new sti gets beat by the new evo in evrything but the front-rear weight distribution including 0-60 and the 1/4 mile. This was in the sti-evo shootout in car and driver. The evo might be a mr so its lighter and even with less hp and torque its the winner where it counts on the timeslip.

Im defintely planning to go beyond 300 whp. That is why I have been considering the EVO this whole time and still am.

the mr actually weighs the same or more than the normal evo 9. a rs is significantly faster than al of them. remember, all 9s get aluminum roof and the other little weight saving options.
btw i wa sbeing sarcastic. I agree with I.E., if you plan on getting 300-350 whp, stis are great; easier to launch, more torque and cool sounding motor. But if you plan on makin 400-500 whp on bone stock block, the evo is the smart choice.

Up To You
The difference of the two cars in my opion is one the EVO handles better. The STI feels really lose to me. 2 if you want stait line performance ya the Sti pulls better stock. 3 The two engine feel so differnt its not funny. And also depends on how big you are the seat in the STi are for big american people and the Evo seats are for smaller poeple. But it comes down to if you like handling and a car for its whole not for on or the other. I had a WRX i loved it i ve had a 03 Evo , and now have a 05 evo and the 05 evo seems much stronger than the 03 what year did you test drive??
Just my 2 cents.

That's weird. For some reason I feel much slower in my 05 MR than the 03.

If the STI feels faster to you then get it!
I don't know about the rest of you, but if I have to choose between a car that feels fast and a car that has better numbers, I'll take the one that feels fast. I don't race for cash, so the amount of fun is the only important factor to me.

The thing to remember though is that in their latest video, which features the newly designed STI, they picked the Subaru over the Evo IX. One of the more interesting things they said was that while the Evo would feel like a better handler to the majority of people, the STI, in the hands of a professional, was actually the better choice.
It's kind of a moot point though, as here in America we get the watered down versions of both cars.
Anyway, I've been wanting an STI for years, and up until now Subaru and Mitsubishi were close enough in performance that it really came down to personal preference. However, when they released the Evo IX, the game changed completely, and now I find myself leaning more towards the Evo camp (hoping/planning on getting a car this summer). For me, I still prefer the Subaru's looks (both interior and exterior), and I feel the build quality and fit/finish are leaps and bounds above the Mitsubishi. However, one can't argue with the monster engine and the quicker steering in the Evo; and when it comes to modding you'll get a lot more for your money in the Evo.
I'm just glad we have these choices to make - either car is a winner in my book.
