Not that it's my style, but dose anyone know the origin and reason for the long front to back racing stripes on cars?

Besides style etc... was it supposed to signal which side the drivers is on in car races that had mixed (right and left hand) steering wheels, so that cars attempting to pass knew how well the other driver might be able to see them? (or maybe visa versa?)

Just always kind of wondered about it.
