Learned the hard way

I just installed a Compustar 2WSS-AS Alarm/Remote starter in my IX. I am extremely happy with this alarm and its features. But to everyone that is installing an aftermarket remote starter in your car, be careful not to leave your keys in it while it is running and shut all the doors. The car will lock you out. I am not sure why my car did this but I suspect it is because of the all of the factory stuff they had to bypass to get the alarm/starter put in. Took me 4 hours to get into the car tonight. First thing I did was get my factory keyless entry remotes, didn’t work. Next I went to and had a new key made, twice. That didn’t work either. Then I tried to slimjim it (carefully, don't worry). Gave up because I did not want to wreck anything. Finally I paid a locksmith to come out and get it open. Moral of the story is just to be careful with the aftermarket alarms/remote starters.

Anyone else have this problem?

I am debating putting this alarm in. May I ask where you got it installed and how much it cost?

Sure thing.

I got the Alarm installed at Audiosmith in Libertyville, IL. I always get my stuff put in there because they do a great job. Here is the breakdown for the installation...

Universal Imobilizer Bypass - $30
Installation of Alarm/Remote Starter - $225

Let me know if you have any other questions.

sounds more like a "feature" the install shop should be able to disable.

That feature is the only reason a remote start is legal on a manual tansmission car! In order for the remote start to function you take the key out of the ignition (the car remains running at this point) and when you get out of the car and shut the door the doors lock and the engine shuts off. This sequence of events ensures that the car is not in gear since you could not remove the key and get out of the car with it running if the car was in gear and moving down the road. The doors locking part makes sure that nobody can put the car in gear after you get out of it. Remote start systems for automatic transmission cars are much simpler and less expensive, but should never be used on a manual transmission car since it can result in someone parking the car and shutting it off in gear, and the remote start function would then result in a "run away car" situation.

Please read your owners manual under the remote start section and it should explain it all for you.

The weird thing was is that I just left the car running so that I could run in my house for a quick second. The car should have known that the key was in the ignition in the ON position. The car was still running. I read through all the manuals and still am not sure why it locked by itself. hmmmm

I was quoted 800-1000 dollars installed for the unit from 3 different places with the imobilzer bypass

If the car is running and the key is in the ignition, the alarm should not lock the doors. Also, you said the dealer made a key, didn't it work to open the door? Didn't you have a spare key? You could even use a regular duplicate from Home Depot to open the door.

I have a Clifford RSX3.5 with all the features you can have including remote starter and turbo timer. The alarm does not interfere with the factory alarm/immobilizer, I can use the factory remotes and open my doors which will trigger the Clifford alarm, but at least I can open the doors. I can even arm both alarms and they won't interfere with each other. It sounds to me like an installation issue.

installed one on the civic and i had to bypass the clutch switch so that it would work. no big deal, but if i ever left it in gear it would take off and it would keep stalling but would also keep trying to start. kinda funny but any way i got the kit for my evo but had the store intall it because i didnt want to deal with it again but they didnt install the remote start part of it even tho i have the kit. they said it was for an automatic, so i just figured i could go back and install the remote part of it. but i will definatly look out for the whole getting locked out of my car part of it!

I guess I just got unlucky. The reason I had to go to mitsubishi to get a key made is because the other (spare) key is destroyed and mounted indide the dash so the chip is present to allow the remote starter to work. What I should have done was get a duplicate key made immediately upon installation. The factory remotes still work but not when the key is in the ignition, so they were no good at that point.

From what I understand they make an electronic module so you don't need to leave a key hidden in a box.

Would you mind PMing me total cost? I have no idea if I am getting quoted high/avg or what because I have never installed an aftermarket alarm in any of my prior vehicles.

The shop that installed your alarm did not set it up correctly for you. The Compustar alarm for a manual car with a turbo should be put on the turbo timer option. In order for the auto start procedure to work you must go through the steps, first hand brake up (unlocks your doors), two open the door before you take the key out of ignition and once the door closes(if you close driver side door and then someone else opens another door to get out or to get something, the car will not autostart) the parking lights should light up. Now the car should stay running and will shut off in 2 min. Anytime you open the door once this mode is on the car will not autostart at all you will have to repeat the steps again. You should set up the car to lock manually not passively.
