Mine had like 6 cracks in it, it sucked, one almost clear across the windsheild. That damn window cracks waaay too easy. I too got a regular lancer one because I don't want to replace it every 6 months. I wonder what the weight difference is?
As for the evo one being lighter, if it is, it should be as strong. The windscreens have to be able to withstand the force of the passenger airbag being forced onto it, so they told me anyway
The safety spec is based upon occupant ejection- the federal gov't does not want you to pass thru the windshield in case of an accident if you're not wearing a seatbelt. To test this at the glass factory they cut a 12"X12" sample from the windshield and drop a ~5lb steel ball on it. The ball must not pass thru within ~3 seconds when dropped from ~4 meters (can't remember the exact numbers; it's been a while). Thicker glass is, of course, more resistant to passage, but a portion of resistance is also due to the degree of the bond between the glass and the vinyl laminate that is between the two sheets of glass that make up the windshield.
