I once saw one that was just a tiny little light, just like what STI's have in their gauge cluster. I was wondering if anyone knows what im talking about and if it would be possible to put it right in the tach like the STI.

I don't think shift lights are rice. I ran my car up at Streets of Willow this past weekend (first time on a track ever) and I'd on occasion bounce off the rev limiter. Looking down at anything on the dash while you're in the corners is not only a challenge, its dangerous. Especially if you're a noob like me.

Then I ran Willow Springs in a Toyota Celica with a shift light. I think its a very useful tool because you can tell whether you're going faster or slower based on when the light comes on at what point on the track.

For example, in the Celica, I knew that I should be changing from 3rd gear to 4th gear on the second bump on the launch pad (6) and on the back straight I knew where I was shifting from 4th to 5th. Or coming out of Turn 9 (I love that turn) on the front straight I knew if that light started blinking earlier I was carrying more speed. So if that light started blinking earlier relative to where I expected it, I knew I was going faster and vice versa if I was going slower.

So I could play with taking slightly different lines, braking, whatever and have fairly quick and definitive proof that I was going faster or slower without having to look down at my speedometer/tach or anything else that requires my eyes leave the road.

My Evo is completely stock, this will be the first "mod" that I do to it. I want the light because I'm heading out to track day events (redline Cali Speedway event 4/5).

I am a total noob and freely admit it. For a noob like me thats just getting into road racing, that has no familiarity with any tracks, I think this tool will be quite useful.

I don't exactly understand the question. If you are going and you downshift and the engine rpms go into the redzone it'll flash.

Basically it should flash anytime the rpms in the engine go beyond whatever point you set the light to go off at.

But if you're asking if the light will tell you that you need to downshift, I'd say no. Like if you're in 4th gear and you should be in third gear and bogging the engine, the shift light isn't going to tell you.

Although I did read about a knock light. Not exactly sure how that works...

That works extremely well when you have a helmet on.

Cool

try looking for the AXAS COMBAT SHIFT LIGHT. i have it in two cars and love it. i has a programable/sequential shift light, brightness control, and how quick you want it to illuminate from left to right or right to left. pretty kewl and useful. it is small also. can send pics if you like.

here you go. alot cheaper now. i paid almost $100.00 when they first came out. remember it lights up sequentially, from left to right-like rally indicators. green, yellow, yellow, red.
