Smart Move? 02 VW Passat GLX to a 06' Evo MR? Questions...

Hey All,

Currently I drive a pretty new 2002 VW Passat GLX (higher end version). I am very familiar with my car, and i know that i am going to be paying VERY HIGH maintence bills coming up (approaching 40k service and 60k service). I am wondering, now that I have a well paying job and am wanting much more of a sport car with much more pickup/acc/speed... Do you think the evo is right for me? The passat was my first car, handed down to me from my Dad as he paid for it new. I've had it for about a year, and am a very good driver and so on...

What problems are there with the newer Evos? Especially the MR? Anything I need to know like common problems or thing I may not like compared to a near-luxery sedan with a small touch of a sports car?

Thanks guys, mean a lot to me.

TJ

Bounce around from dealer to dealer and see if one will let you test drive a regular EVO (chances of test driving a MR are slim). If you like it (which you will) buy it. Good Luck

A couple of comments:

The Evo is an equally expensive vehicle to maintain as the Passat. Performance tires, brake pads, and maintenance at 30K intervals are all expenses that should be planned for in your budget.

The Evo, if not abused, is turning out to be a remarkably reliable vehicle. That favors the Evo over the Passat which does not have a stellar reliability record, according to the latest figures from Consumer Reports. Unexpected repair bills should be lower with the Evo.

The Evo of course is in a different performance bracket than the Passat. You know that. You also know that the Evo's luxury items and other amenities are less than the Passat. I suspect you know that too. Interior room is about the same, suprisingly. Insurance rates are probably higher for the Evo, but there are many variables involved in that depending on your driving record and where you live.

That said, you should buy the Evo if it is the kind of car you wish to drive. It is much higher strung than the Passat, with a rougher ride, scary-fast acceleration, and a no-compromise approach to its mission. Switching rides for economic reasons almost never makes sense unless the older car is on its deathbed, which doesn't sound like it applies to your situation. But what's the fun in that? If you can afford it, the Evo is a heck of a car. Just don't expect it to have the same operating costs as a Corolla or Civic.

i got 3 kids... and i want a sports car. The evo or subee is the only one to go with (for me the evo). If you are a true sports car guy, you will throw rocks at that VW after driving the evo for a while.
go for it dude. I hear the MIVEC is killer.

Hey All,

Thanks for the comments very much. And yes, I have a little bit of extra cash hanging around and im thinking about modding my passat (I modded it a little). However, even after putting 15-20k min into it, im still under 300 WHP, which is pathedic. I understand completely that the interior is not as nice.. but hell, im 16, almost 17. How bad would my insurence rate go up. Right now it's at 490/6 months for my passat. And yes, I pay it, not my parents, lol. I pay for everything. I have no tickets, no accidents, live in a great low crime area (suberbs of chicago) and definitely want to upgrade my car.. But the Evo MR looks so damn nice... :-)

Any more thoughts? I love my VW, i really do.. But the Evo= Pure Sex.

TJ

P.S.- gotevo?- Very cool that you used to drive a passat. Were you a member of Passatworld/ ClubB5?

Nope....lol never really had a chance to get into modding the Passat. It was a 1.8T GL 5 spd. lol. I look at REVO (i think that's what they were called), u know the chip that gives you like 40 more hp . That was a joke. Then the Sti came out. I wanted one the second i saw it. Looked it up, read about it, even dreamt about the STI. You could honestly say i was in love.. hehe. One day came when i was told about the EVO!!! (oh snap) a buddy of mine got me to go with him to test drive one. To my surprise they allowed me to sit in the passanger seat while going WOT (note: this was a brand new evo. kinda stupid of the salesman, but he got the point across real good). Once i felt that inital jerk i was sold. I WAS SOLD!!!! There is nothing like that feeling. Couple days later i started getting serious and went to test drive the sti myself. Just not the same monster, yes it felt quick, yes it looked good, and YES it bowed down to the EVO. heh. You won't regret one second of this switch. To tell you the truth i dont miss the passat's luxury one bit.

i went from a 24v vr6 to the evo and never had one regret. The maintence will probabaly be the same if not higher. Your going to miss the interior of the passat, but that will be replaced with POWER. Trust me i know where your coming from modding a vw in most cases is not fun and costs ALOT for it to run the same times as a stock evo. Both are great cars good luck.

Hey Dude,
I traded my 02 Passat GLS 5spd (63K miles) for an Evo IX. Just got one thing to say the EVO is awesome, the ride not as smooth as the Passat, but u don't buy a sports car for smoothness. U want it to be as wild as possible and oh yeh the EVO is :-).....Go for it !!!!

Crap, didnt mean to reply that. How much do you think a brand new MR will sell for by the end of the summer? Also, what packages are available for it? I most definitely want a sunroof, even if that does mean more weight higher up...

I would say test drive the Evo and that will tell you if its right for you. I mean who doesnt want boring interior, paint that fades, stiff bumpy ride, lots of outside noise, expensive to replace tires, weak clutch etc....If your cool with that then buy it. See I was cool with it so I traded in my 98 TA and love my Evo.
