EVO to STi

Has anyone here gone from there 2003 or whatever year EVO to an STi partly because of reliability issues? It seems as if you were to find a used STi that had never been modded, had been taken care of, and like wise with a used EVO the STi would be a stronger daily driver, sure they don't respond to mods well but they seem to be built better, in the drivetrain and other important components that have given EVO's the red flag I'd think, of course STi horror stories are out there but I am talking about never modded, used well taken care of EVO's and STi's... are they equal or does the advantage go to one?

my brother has an 04 sti. his problems where
- his rear shocks blew, replaced under warranty. its the most common probem
- center differential was defective, replaced under warranty.
- transmission mount broke. also replaced

thats about it. he has had it for 6k miles, and an exhaust is the only mod.
other owners complain of 4-5 gear grind, and a number of broken front axles. the axles would brake from frequent launching.

however, i do see that 04-05 STI's are better built than the 03-04 evo's. i havent read too many complaints on the 05-06 evo's.

Had on 03 evo, modded, never a problem
Have an 05 STi, not modded, never a problem
Have an 06 evo, not modded, no problems.

If you were buying one just based on reliability, the sti is the one that's better rated. But they are different cars.

I want an EVO, something about the appearence, I love the look, it is an easier car to find and just I don't know... I think SEX when I see an EVO, an STi...well meh, there are a ton around here however I must think outside the box and look at the big picture, if there is indeed a large difference in reliability then by all means I want to enjoy the car, not let the shop enjoy my car and my wallet. I'd love to buy an EVO but if the STi is going to treat me better in terms of less problematic then by all means I can have the cake and eat it too... I am not a wrench head, mod knowledge is there but when it comes to basic crap I'm ignorant... I want to buy the car, some basic bolt ons, and drive that is it... no launches, probobly no track trips unless it's being parked to watch, cosmetics=ok but I don't plan on AUTOX, drag just want one of the two cars, the less of the pain in the asses.

In Maine there are 4 STi's for every 1 EVO I see.

I can't talk much yet about the EVO as a whole as I have only 3K miles on it so far, but the 4G63 engine is very stout.
I purchased a Talon TSi AWD in 1990 NEW. I had it for 15 years, put 245K miles on it and never had to rebuild the engine (4G63). I raced it so it wasn't babied either. Car was modded and was putting out more horsepower than my EVO and kept going strong. The original manual tranny lasted 220K before it finally blew out. Original water pump and alternator both lasted +200K miles before they needed replaced. Still had the original AC on it and was NEVER recharged, with the original freon in it and was ICE cold!

Because of the reliability of my Talon is why I was not hesitant in purchasing an EVO.

No doubt the powerplant is perfected, rock solid and amazing... it is just the other expensivo components like clutch, transfer case, transmission... grinding gears etc etc I just hate suprises especially dealer ones. They can't TELL me, they just say hey bring the car in, the they work on it and I get a $500-800-1000 bill or some crap, then I'd drive the EVO into a tree, I don't want to deal with that random crap because I they way I drive, no track, no strip just daily driving I shouldn't have to put up with it... I won't baby it in terms of heavy foot but power shifting etc, launching... is a no go with my EVO if I got one, so if one will be more likely or almost positively not going to make me shell out random chunks of cash etc then sweet I'd buy.

the new evo ix has a 5yr 60k mile bumper to bumper
10yr 100k drivetrain

just buy one and dont mod it and let the warrranty cover any problems

the evo is not any less reliable than the sti

the sti has all kinds of issues in itsself

dealers still void warranties if the car is completely stock. they simply blame most things on abuse.

My EVO gets driven the way that it should be driven, hard. I am very safe with it i.e. I slip the clutch on launches and such, but I didn't buy it to drive around scared that something will break. I hear of reliability issues but haven't experienced them. I don't want to throw stones but maybe some people are harder on thier EVOs than others.

The best mod that you can do for your car is to be able to properly drive it. Learn to launch, rev match, brake, ect... Basically don't over drive the car which most of us couldn't do with the EVO anyway. We would just push past our own limts. The number one reliablity issue I see is people buying the car modding the hell out of it and then wrecking, but they also do that when stock!

As far as an EVO vs Subie, well you see what I drive. The subbie is a great car but you will always wish that you bought the EVO. It just makes to much D@mn since.

I have a 03 Evo with 30,000 miles and so far has been the most reliable, trouble-free
vehicle i've owned to date (were talking 10-15 cars owned). I would not even consider
switching to an Sti but don't doubt they are probably very reliable since Subaru has a
good name.

You are exactly right!

My old STi I hated the doors...granted they have "frameless" doors but the fronts were as bad as the INtegra (old ITR & GSR I've owned).
The rear door on the STi was great but the fronts were $hit!

That aspect makes the EVO feel "better Crafted" to me.

Problems w/ my old 04 STi:
-Grinding in 5th and 6th gear (catching reverse) = GM Synchromesh Cleared that right up!
My friend had an STi and man, I would hear something about the rear shock or the axles like everyday lol...
-Rear Poping noise from Struts @ slow speeds = springs and coilovers never cured the noise
-No other problems - no boost creep or anything

all in all a Great car w/ the many mods that I did.

EVO = TCase whine but I'm over it now.Soon to be built by SHep
