those with a five speed

i was driving today and hit about 80mph and felt the need to want to shift once more...is this something common once you start modding and getting more power? cause i really feel that six gear could help on the highway.

I hear you man. I always wish there was a 6th gear on my car when I am on the highway. Especially when I am in those 75mph zones and the car is screaming along at 3000 rpms, or more. Our gearing ratio is really setup for tons of acceleration though, and not much for cruise.

If it makes you feel better, the 6spd in the MR does have an extra gear, but 4th and 5th are just shorter. 6th isn't much of an overdrive...it's very similar to your 5th gear. Now, wanting a hypothetical 6th gear overdrive after your 5th gear is understandable. I feel the same way even with a 6spd.

the 6th gear on the 6 speed and the 5th gear on the 5 speed have almost the same gear ratios, the 6th gear isn't as much of a highway gear as everyone seems to think, all the others are just that much shorter.

really dang, that sucks. the reason why i feel like i am complaining, is because when i am in 5th gear and i hear the engine roaring at 3-3.5k rpm...it's makes me just want to floor it more...but sometimes i wanna cruise. oh well, at least it makes me feel better that im not the only one and that the MR's feel the same thing.

The other problem is that we are right at the peak boost/spool area, so any modulation of the throttle builds boost immediately, so if you have a strong BOV, you're always having to deal with potential surging. Ah, the beauty of the Evo...

Really? So the 6 speeds cruise around in the same high RPM range then? Thats too bad :/

Pretty much, yeah. Maybe 100-200rpm lower when cruising in 6th? Our main advantage is a 5th gear that is highly useful for road racing.

Do you have to switch to 5th in the 1/4?

The 5spd _IS_ better for the 1/4-mile...or rather, the VIII 5spd is better, but not the IX (short ratio like the MR). The perk for the 6spd is shorter ratios in 4th and 5th that allow for excellent powerbands and acceleration on the road course. We also can rap through the first 4 gears more quickly as long as we don't go past 110mph.

PDX, I do not yet shift to 5th, because the highest I've trapped is 113.xx which is around 7700rpm. At 115+, we approach 8k, which is really pushing it on the stock valvetrain, and we don't have much power there anyway. Now that I'm in CO, I won't be trapping 115, but the way the power drops off up top, I might find myself shifting early in every gear, including 5th. I will find out next week.

You could get a new final drive from TRE (5th section down on linked) to change the rpm, if you have the hp to pull it.

Sometimes I wish I had a 6th gear, but then I remember that even with just five gears I still get better gas mileage than the 6-speed MRs. And with $3+ per gallon for super unleaded, that's fine with me, I'll deal with being at 3500 rpm on the freeway.
