I'm going to get rid of it soon. I guess if you don't use shuffle on your iPod it's not as bad...

In 2006 Alpine released new head units with what is called the Ipod Full Speed technology, which allows you to scroll through your play lists, see the song titles, play list titles, etc. at your beck and call.
The older technology in Alpine did not allow that, which is why I waited. You probably have the older version. And Pioneer and Panasonic have the older version of the Ipod Adapter.
I seriously wished I worked for Alpine here, because the ease of use is just stellar, I would recommend this to ANYONE who has an Ipod, needs a CD/MP3 head unit, and wants to do it all for under $250 (including the cheap ipod adapter, $29.99 versus others which are like nearly $100!!!)
Not sure what you mean by "it" but if you mean the HU you are buying having an AUX input then yes you could run it that way, but you would then have to control the music using the ipod. That'd be pretty annoying and dangerous while driving. The IPOD interfaces allow you to control the IPOD via the HU's controls and most let you see the song on the screen while you are doing it.

I have a Pioneer 9800BT, I had to buy the IPOD adapter separate for $50. Even the newer Pioneer decks that are IPOD "ready" still require a $30 cable I think, but at any rate I like the ability to keep the IPOD out of sight in my glovebox if I hop out of the car for a short amount of time, but having easy access to take it with me if I am going to be away from the car for a while. Plus having it there keeps it out of my cupholder or sliding around getting tangled up in something else. IT will keep track of the "Shuffle Songs" position even after the car has been off or even if the IPOD has been disconnected then reconnected.

I carry my ipod all over the place so for me its more convienient but the drawback was the wear on the phone jack.
