Be careful when buying used tires!!! Learn from me!

I knew it when I saw the price of 300.00 for "used" Advan tires with 9K miles on them. Mine were bald (shaved RA1's) I thought I could buy new RA1's again, for 161.00 each. I then thought if these Advans looked good, I WOULD BUY THEM!! It passed the "penny-test", and the tread looked FINE!! I though, what the heck, they aren't chunked, and maybe the driver took great care when they were on the car.

They visually looked fine, tread depth fine!! My Advans lasted only 5K miles, and they were "chunked", or smaller in diameter on the inside as compared to the outside, kind of a "cone" shaped tread from the front and back. But these looked fine WITHOUT AIR IN THEM!! Here is a photo with air in them, "CHUNKED", they drive like crap, and are noisey!! I am going to take them off and roll them down the street!

Beware when you buy tires, they look different when they are "aired up"!!! You probably know this, but I didn't. Just another wise tip from the field!! I make the mistakes, YOU LEARN FROM THEM!!

is it just that one tire? even still i say you could get a couple thousand miles out of them still worth 300 bucks. then take the best one put in on an extra rim and use it as a spare

They look okay to me. You should see mine ;-) So let's see some more pics of that side-exit exhaust you got there!

looks like the tire is feathering and cupping bad which means bad alignment and/or lack of rotation. i see this wear all the time since i sell tires. also the tires will wear like that for the life of them because once a tire gest in a wear pattern for a while you cant correct it.

Are you saying the inside has gotten smaller without wearing down the tread?

because from my little laptop it looks like there is respectable tread across the tire.

ALL tires are like this!! The handling is BAD!!! Yes you could get a few thousand miles out of them, but not competitively!! These are junk for what I need them for racing!!! They are fine to use to go to church with! Just my 2c. I know the price was good, so I cant complain there. who would give me my 300 bucks for them? I rest my case. the car they came off of was out of alignment, my car is aligned, and have coilovers, that makes for a "crappy" ride!!

Feathering and cupping were the words I was looking for, not "chunking" the 3 center treads are the "contact patch" now, as the outside row of tread doesnt come into play till HARD cornering. it just has an unsettling/unsure feel to them.

why don't you get them shaved... it'll kill the mileage but you might even get better performance for a while hahaha

I did ask somewhere if that is a possibility to shave tires that have 9K miles on them, anyone know if you can? I mean AFTER they have been "heat cycled". Thanks.

I would not have bought a used set of advans with 9k on them for $2. The you get out of those tires is terrible. I had near 10k on mine, which was close to the end for them and I lowered the car to weeks ago (still haven't gotten it realigned) and they are shot now. The inner tread is gone in a couple spots on both front tires. Lucky me though I just ordered some new wheels and tires last night so all will be good when those get here, and the alignment is done.

You bought old, well used tires. They have most likely been heat-cycled to death already - meaning that they have so many heat cycles in them that they are no longer as sticky as a brand new tire would be. They are not going to be as good as new, fresh tires for any kind of racing. And there is no point in getting them shaved anymore.

Buying used wear items is always a risky proposition.

Yes, it can be done and I have done it on other tires. You may even get lucky and find that further down in the tread there's stickier rubber (not severely heat cycled). I would shave it just enough to get rid of the feathering...take off 1/32 maybe.

I had a set of tires that chunked really bad, but then had them shaved down to where the tread was even again and it worked great and saved me from having to buy another set of tires.
