Any reason to buy IX GSR instead of IX MR

Hey guys, I just joined the Evolutionm.com forums. I'm in the market to buy a IX evo but need some opinions. Why should I buy a MR instead of a GSR or vice versa. I know the differences between the two already so what it boils down to is the technical data between both cars.

Is the MR that much faster?

Is the GSR or MR transmissions geared better for the 4G63T?

Which is better for road racing and drag racing? I do both and want the model that is better for both. Please don't say RS then, because I still want some creature comforts because it will be the car I drive daily.

I've driven a EVO VIII GSR and a EVO VIII MR, MR felt quicker because of the 6-speed. But I don't like relying on the seat of your pants feel, I like data. So I need your help guys!

Thanks in advance! I can't wait to be apart of the EVO community. I've been waiting for some time now.

This has been covered a whole bunch of times. No one has the right answer for anyone else. Just read up on the impressions others have and you have to decide if it is worth it to spend more for an MR.

Sorry if it's been covered 19319239123 times.

I know I might get flamed for this, because once agian I did not search.

But which transmission is more stout, the 6 speed or 5 speed.

You say this, and then still have the gall to ask the question? I was just about to answer everything, since I have an MR and drag race, road race, autocross, and rallycross (as of this past weekend), so I can give you great feedback along with intricate knowledge of the IX 5spd difference, but I just decided not to, sorry.

Come on... don't be arrogant guys. This kind of stuff makes me mad. On the bimmerforums.com website that I came from, everybody will answer new guys questions without attitude... even if it's been asked before a dozen times or more. This place is starting to get like NASIOC. Please don't let it go that way. People that have knowledge but have a pompous attitude gain no respect from me... so don't kiss their butt when they spit in your face.

I chose the GSR version because yeah... I've heard that the 6 speed isn't as strong and it basically will provide all the attributes without spending the extra cash. If you want a suspension upgrade to some Bilsteins you can probably get the shocks for around $500 extra. I felt that the extra money spent for an MR was too much for what you are getting. The weight lost isn't worth the extra $4-5 grand in my opinion. I still like the car though.

RS = cheapest EVO and definitely the model to get if you are going to run track days and/or race it.

MR = best street EVO with the most features, but expensive for what you get compared to RS and IX (GSR).

IX (GSR) = Not quite an MR, but if you don't want to spend the extra $$$ you'll still have a damn fine street car. If you want a sunroof, this is you only choice.

Unfortunately, Mmelmann hasn't spent over a year answering the same questions over and over only to have newbies ask the same question again without searching to find your previous, long-winded answer to that same question even when they know they're supposed to search. Yeah, we should be nicer!!

It's also too bad that Mmelmann didn't really understand the differences the MR has and made his decision based off this lack of information (and false information).

So prevent me from making the same mistake (lack of information), educate me Warrtalon.

Read my previous answers to this question. AFter you're done, then ask me specific, educated questions.

Here is a fact Warr.... there are new guys that will come on here daily and that's a good thing. They should feel welcome here.

I don't claim to know "everything" but, if I did... I would try to help.... especially if I lived my life in front of a computer screen. And if I didn't feel like replying again and again, I wouldn't waste my time looking like an arrogant punk. That's high school bully style... grow up. Nobody want's to hear it. That's a direct sign of a lack of self esteem.

If nobody posted questions, this site would be dead and nobody would have anything to talk about. There is only so much that you can talk about when discussing car stuff... so why not talk about it. I love to talk, learn, and drive cars. I say keep it alive and positive. Don't act like a punk and don't let knowlege go to your head. You've already lost my respect.

As for the gearboxes, I have both a 5-speed RS (VIII) and a 6-speed MR (IX), so I speak from experience. I like the 6-speed on the street better, expecially at freeway speeds. I like being able to shift between 5th and 6th as the conditions call for it. The shift linkage in the MR is sweet -- I think it's Teflon coated or something.

If you are going to track the car, I reiterate that the RS is the model to get. The 5-speed is better suited to the track, since you don't have to shift as much as you would with the 6-speed, which covers the same ground with gears 3, 4 and 5, as the 5-speed covers with gears 3 and 4.
