I typically have mine off in the summer and back on in the winter. I sure that just like anything else...too much water in there couldn't be good. I know a few guys on here run year round with the vent off.

If it rains or you wash your car, you should put it back on. Not only does water make your engine bay look like crap, there is also a possibility of getting water into your engine and a slight possibility of having your block crack due to the engine changing temps to quickly if water gets on it while its hot. That said, mine is off right now, but when I wash it, I just slide a cardboard peice under the hood to protect my valve cover.

when you take it off you probably help heat extraction when the car is at a stand still but not when its moving. the louvers on the vent tray are there to help create vacuum. maybe a good idea at autox.
