Help! This might be a stupid question, but...
How do I remove the MR shift knob? The shift knob in my '05 MR gets ubearably hot in the summer and incredibly cold in the winter. We are talking almost impossible to touch. Short of wearing my wife's insulated pot holders, I think a solution is to change the knob. I found a Razo plain resin knob and I was going to install it but I ran into a problem.... I can't remove the OEM knob... The damned thing is in there so tight that I cannot turn it with my unaided hand. Is there a trick to removing the 6 speed MR shift knob? Please help me with this if any of you know something I don't. I don't want to put a wrench on the MR knob because I don't want to damage it. Also, If there is some trick or step that I need to take, I don't want to break something.... Anybody ever changed their shift knob? Any problems?
Thanks
BTW, I've changed lots of shift knobs before in my other cars and I never had this problem before.....

He says its on very tight. Maybe you could just grab like a rag put it around the knob than put a wrench to it. Another thing is you could just pay awrnold 5 bucks and he will do it, after all he is the governator.
The 6 speed shift knob comes off in a counterclockwise motion. Get a good grip on it and turn the knob counterclockwise and it will come off.
Be forewarned that not all shift knobs will fit the 6 speed shifter due to the reverse lockout ring. Make sure there is enough of a recess in the knob to allow the ring collar to slip inside.

I have always found it easy to go to the fabric store and buy some leather or alcantara and make a slip on booty for it....but yes, Ive seen it done, counter clockwise.
Get a vise-grips and a piece of card board and wrap the shift knob with it...it should prevent it from marring. No vise grip? Channel locks.....or use a quick grip or a C-Clamp

Channel locks are a great solution. I HATE aluminum shift knobs and swapped out the stock knob on my 05 RS (bare aluminum) for the stock knob on my 03 (leather wraped) befor I sold the 03.
An old leather glove slipped over the knob will keep it from getting scared up when you put the channel locks on it.

Be sure to get a proper knob for the 6-spd. I tihnk it's blasphemous to remove it personally - it's an MR trademark.

I don't know if the Razo knob will work or not. I hope it does, but I wont know 'til I try it...
yea, same thing happens to me with the mitsu oem blue metal knob, everyday as a matter of fact the thing gets DAMN hot. just bare with it for a few mins its not that serious especially here in the florida heat its been feeling damn near 100 degrees. just throw a glove in the car or put a pair of socks on it to keep it from scalding you.
