naww.....see, 100 low leaded gas is not the key

Nawww........see, 100 low leaded gas is not the key. Now I may be a lil tipsty blazzed over here but..... I dont think that is the key. NOw seee.......what is the key is that you have to run 100 octane "UNLEADED" fuel only . Non of this lightly leaded bull**** see now you dont want any mmt, or wood alcohol ...methanayglycolmother****ing something I forgot. well anyway.... you dont need lead in your car , stick to that idea and the rest will fall into play.

The lead in the gas will quickly kill your O2 sensors. This will do two things - throw off the A/F mixture when the ECU is reading from the o2 sensor, and evertually will trigger a CEL.

What if you have an O2 simulator and a test pipe? Is there still a problem? There has been some talk on these forums of some vendors releasing O2 simulators soon.

If you are running a test pipe that triggers a CEL on unleaded gas and no simulator, will that “throw off the A/F mixture when the ECU is reading from the o2 sensor”?

There are two O2 sensors on the car - one pre-cat and one post cat. The O2 simulators either replace or massage the signal from the post cat o2 sensor. This sensor is the one most likely to trigger the CEL. The death of this sensor will probably not matter with an O2 simulator, depending on how they are working. If the simulator is just outputting a fixed voltage to the ECU at all times, it won't matter. If it is clamping the voltage output of the 2nd O2 sensor and the sensor stops out put of any voltage then you will still get the CEL.

The pre cat O2 sensor is the one the ECU reads to determine the A/F mixture in closed loop operations. The failure of this sensor will cause your fuel mileage to turn to crap - even when you are not hot rodding the car. Its faliure may or may not cause a CEL. But the lead contamination will cause the sensor to be outputting a 'lean' mixture setting so the ECU will always be enriching the fuel mixture. This is why the MPG's will drop. I think on the ODBII systems that running in this mode for too long will cause the CEL to appear.
