Clunk noise in R
This morning i got up to go get some breakfast and when i put the car in reverse it kind of felt like it didnt want to move when i easied off the clutch so i gave it some gas and it made a loud clunk noise, its done this twice now, seems to only do it when the car sits for more then 12+hours. Think its just fluids gettng to settled?
Sure sounds like somethings up.
If you're the original buyer and it;s still under Warranty, just take it to the dealer to get it diagnosed or - find a dealer with a "freindly" eye towards mods.
Worst case - take it back to stock first, raises fewer questions that way, not too bad in your case.... I had to swap cams, gears, complete exhaust, shifter, clutch line, blah blah blah ... to get my 5th gear synchro warranty'd.
good luck

geez lol, i think its probably about time for the xfer case fluid to be changed anyways, i might do that before i bring it to a factory, non of the dealerships by me would service it, cause they dont have the proper stuff, so i would have to end up driving 500+ miles just to get it serviced.

im the 2nd owner of the car also, i bought it from a guy on the forums, he wasnt into racing really he keep it stock and it was in pretty good shape with only 16k miles when i got it.
I have the EXACT same noise.
I almost sounds like a metal-on-metal noise.....very hard to explain. Kind of a clunk/clank noise that sounds like something has resistence on it, and then snaps or springs back (and when it snaps back thats when the sound is heard)
I am at 45k miles NOT A SINGLE problems minus replacing brakes and a burnt out dash light!
I will admit i do have the notorious windshield noise, but this reverse noise is the only thing that has me minorly worried!
It has not given me any problems whatsoever and the car still runs strong, i am just very curious abt the mystery noise!

I have the same noise and I'm sitting at 42,000. Only happens in reverse...I've lived with it for at least 15,000 miles now, car still runs strong. Like everyone else just curious what the sound is.

i have the same thing...sometimes. i figured it to be my exhaust hitting something just because i have an RNR exhaust and it fits kinda tight. but it only happens in reverse when the car hasnt been warmed up all the way.
You guys don't think it is the rear brake pads sticking to the rotor. Mine IX will do this after it has been washed and put away in the garage. I don't drive the car that much and usually the first time I go to drive it after the sit it makes that pop noise. Come to think of every car I have ever owned with rear disc brakes has done this I time or two if the conditions are right.
This is caused by the e brake pads sticking to the drums on the rear disk. Did you wash it or did it rain before you stopped driving the night before? My car does it everytime I wash it or it rains. If this is not the case take it somewhere and have it inspected. Good luck.
well I have the same problem and I have had it since day 1 I'm going to be getting it fixed soon because my 3 year warrenty is almost up. My syncrows are also toast and my car has 20,000 miles and its an 03. I would sugest putting it in 4th and then into reverse and you wont have a problem. This has been a dsm problem for years. Hope this helps I'll let you know my outcome with the dealership hopefully hillsboro mitsu is mod friendly.
