Well, since im a new evo owner, and havn't driven in too many evos for any long period of time, gotta question.

Past 4k rpm, there is a noticable change in the engine note. Its like it starts to gurgle more past 4k. To me it almost sounds like the engine is knocking, but perhaps im just paranoid. Is this normal?

yeah, sound slike it. my buddy said his does the same, a norcalevo guy said the 4g63 just has a weird resonance past 4500rpm.

I guess im just a 4g63 n00b, lol

 

yea its normal. That doesnt say not to ever check your oil.
