Tow Hitch

Well, I have all but made my mind up to buy the EVO over the STi, except for a couple of practical issues that are holding me back.

One of which is that this car will be replacing two cars, and so must be able to handle all the responsibilites of my two cars. So the EVO must be able to tow my shifter kart to the race track.

Has anyone put a hitch on yet?

Would this hitch work?

http://www.hitch-web.com/proDescrip....de=34258&OID=8

Here are the instalation instructions:

http://www.hitch-web.com/assets/2/docs/dt24718.pdf

Any reason that would not work? Is the back of the EVO any different than the regular lancer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

The car's manual says not to use this car for towing at all unless absolutely an emergency.

while I appreciate that, I figure if my Boxster can tow a trailer weighing less than 400 lbs, and my Subaru wagon with 175,000 miles can tow it, I am pretty sure an evo will be just fine.

I guess my point was....extremely low odds that someone has already put a tow hitch on and if they did I don't think they'd tell the people on this board for fear being made fun of. Sad but true.

right, I get ya.

Just for reference, my Boxster's manual says the same, it is pretty standard language, meant more for the folks who think it would be a good idea to tow a horse with the car, as apposed to a little trailer weighing about what a couple folks in the rear seat (of the evo) would weigh.

If I do, I will be certain and post a message about it. It is a few months off, but I will keep the board posted if it happens.

mine says the same...not to tow..... I don't know the actual reason why. Well there isnt even a place to put a hitch on the bumper...if you can even call the rear end of an eclipse an actual traditional bumper...looks like all body kit to me.

I wouldn't think a turbo sports car is the best way to tow due to the potential of yanking your rear bumper off or something of that nature under acceleration. I'm not saying that a person will be launching with a trailer but you'd think if you twitched just right you could do some serious damage.

I won't argue that. Manuals are mostly meant for people without a clue and also for those of us who want to know about the little details just to say we know.

I don't think a trailer would be that much of a problem. Autocrossers mount trailer hitches (for small trailers to tow their race tires) to all kinds of cars that aren't recommended to tow anything, according to their manuals.

I would think that as long as you don't exceed the maximum GVWR of the car, and keep the tongue loading of the trailer near zero, you should be fine.

towing? get a towtruck or a nice pick up truck. Car is not suposed to be towing ****, I'm sure you can but the fact of the matter is it is not good for your car.

Thank you Secret Chimp, clearly it does no harm whatsoever to the car.

I'll be looking into this as soon as I get another set of rims. I want to tow my tires and tool chest to Driving Schools and Autox's. Let me know if this unit works for an Evo owner, I am very curious.

Oh and towing items under 400lbs should be no problem for the Evo as long as the owner is smart enough to not drive aggressively. Oh and like mentioned above, little or no tongue weight.
