ECU Extension Harness (S-AFC)
Ok guys.. I have good news and bad news..
anyone who has been following the forum about the S-AFC extension harness... if not, please do a search so I don't have to explain again exactly what this is...
I haven't gotten all the numbers back yet, but I am placing an initial order for all the components required.. I haven't gotten my wiring quote back from a local electronics assembly company.. anyway, I made a 'sample purchase' of enough components to build 10 harnesses... The good news is they will probably cost around $100 to produce (parts labor, etc..) but possibly less.. the bad news is that all of these parts are on an 8 week backorder.. ARGH!
I am holding off on placing the order for a few days, I would like to order enough parts to fill the entire demand I might see, and not have to wait 2 months for a second order.. I'd like to drum up interest for at least 25 harnesses to justify a full order (and get a discount on parts and manufacturing)
This is not a cheap endeavor for me.. However I will make the first lot of harnesses available at a discount, but I want to make sure that they work correctly first..
This is going to take quite a bit longer to manufacture due to the lead time of the parts, plus the manufacturing time..
What do you guys think?? Is it worth waiting for? I am uncertain if anyone else in the industry had a head start and is already producing harnesses... before I lay out several thousand dollars I want to be certain I'm not going to lose out..
ANYONE who sells the S-AFC, or any piggyback ECU, let me know if your interested in buying a bulk of these to sell as turnkey with your pre-programmed EVO AFC products.. it will make this alot more cost effective on my part. Again, it looks like it will take approximately 3 months to turn these around as finished products.

So far I ordered enough hardware for 10 harnesses.. 1 being a prototype, and 1 being a reproduction mule, so that means that 8 will be available for sale.. Obviously there are more than 8 of you interested.. I have not yet set final pricing because I still need to determine how much wire, epoxy and solder will be needed, along with the assembly costs... As I compile a list of you guys, I will determine how much more hardware I need. Does anyone have any idea how much these harnesses typically sell for? And like I said previously, I'm targeting for around $100, though I'd like to sell them alot cheaper if possible.
I'd also like to know what other cars/trucks use the exact same connectors and harness since the more we make, the cheaper it costs to make them. One detail I wanted to let everyone know is that the wiring colors will either be all one color (for an extension harness its pretty typical) or Random colors.. This is important to clarify because you will have to use Pin# or trace the wire to a pin from the stock harness. This is intentional, basically because I'm creating these to work across several car models, Its obviously the Evo, 2G DSM, any Mitsubishi with 4 connector harnesses, some early Subaru's, Some Chrysler products, and other Imports that share these connectors.
What I'd like to do is sell them through the same vendors selling the AFC hardware, this way they can pre-splice them for their products, but nobody has contacted me about it yet.

Oh, another thought.. Just so you guys know, I have access to be able to manufacture just about anything, so PM me with any ideas. If they are cost effective, and pan out, you can get free parts out of it, if not more. Please keep in mind I don't want to re-invent the wheel, just make our lives easier.
Oh I do have another product that I may look into having manufactured, Its a large volume (aluminum) fresh air box similar to the monster sport, but it uses a cone filter, however I only fabbed up a prototype out of foamboard at this time.
Oh, moderator, if this is really off-topic, PM Me so I know where to post this stuff in the future..

I have some really bad news.. However it will probably be no surprise to you folks who had tried this in the past.. The suppliers I contacted about the extension harness components will not sell small quantities of these parts, Minimum is around 500 pieces.. I really don't know that I could sell 500 of them in a short enough period of time to lay out $10k in parts, plus the manufacturing costs... I am still waiting for a company in Australia who manufactures diagnostic harnesses for ECU diagnostic equipment to get back in touch with me. Since they already are a purchaser of these components, it is our only choice right now. http://www.electra.com.au/harness.htm this is the link to the company.. They seemed to be willing to work with me, but I have not heard back.. basically it would be similar to the harnesses shown, without the probe box (and taps) Its really a shame, AMP (The manufacturer) is reluctant to send me samples of the hardware (Small quantities) I'm even willing to pay for it.. But I don't understand how on can prototype something when their required to purchase a large bulk before you know it will even work. Ugh.. Sorry guys.. Maybe something will pan out shortly..
