cam gear needed?

I've just purchased a set of Helix 272 cams but the store was out of cam gears at that time so I only have the cams on-hand. Was wondering if I can use standard cam gear with these cams or an aftermarket set of cam gears are mandatory?
Any performance increase by adding the cam gears?

thank you very much.

I would get cam gears for sure, HKS or Greddy! You can advance or retard timing on the cams with adjustable cam gears.

There is no need for cam gears, if you plan an getting your ECU flashed after you install your cams (which you should!).

I already have an EMS on my car with RX6 TCW15 P16 turbo. So it's not really "a must" right ?

Why The computer Flashes can't change Camshaft timming (excluding MIVEC) only Ignition Timing. But i do agree that a custom tune is in order.

I don't think WarrTalon (or Buschur ?) think that they are needed. But you see a ton of shops use them. (and it eems like Buschur had a pretty fast run recently :-D )

I got them and they can make a difference. Whether it's good or bad will depend on how you use them. I'm fighting some power issues and wonder if I modded myself into a corner with everything ;-) I'm running at 0/0 right now just to see.

My tuner said he's never been able to extract any power with cam gears. He said he'll pick up 10lbs of torque and lose 5hp, then he'll pick up 10hp and lose 15lbs of torque. Unfortunately he told me after I bought and installed the gears.

I've been told that cam gears allow you to dial in the powerband more acurately. I'm planning on installing a set on my car to tweak my 280/272 combo.

I was told by someone running the exact set up as I am that using a "+1/ -1" made a huge difference , so why would you say it's not needed?

hmmm perhaps I'll try w/o the gears first and see if I'm happy with it. If not, then will add gears later on.

Cam Gears aren't "needed" but no tuner will say that they can't help. Cam gears can help idle and shift around the power band. So they are definetly for fine tuning. But they aren't necessarily "needed"
