Getting melted plastic of off a muffler?

Ok, I have full megan turboback, and the catback section exits my rear bumper to far to the drivers side, oh well ill get over it, However it melted my bumper on that side, which I didnt really care about the inside piece of the bumper that noone can see anyhow. My SS exhaust shield arrived today, and when I took off my muffler, i figured the plastic would peal or chip off easliy, i mean its just plastic melted onto smooth metal? Not the case, this stuff is stuck on good, Im just wondering if there are any household chemicals that will take it off of my muffler tip. Goof off maybe? also stuff that wont discolor the muffler tip. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Try some alcohol based products, and let it sit and dissolve the plastic.

That wont damage the metal at all to, ok im off to the wall to grab some rubbing alchol? Maybe paint thinner would work too?How long will it normally take to get fully dissolved? Would gasoline work at all? I know gas will strip paint in a matter of miniutes? (spray paint at least)

The metal should be just fine. If that doesn't work, try to chp it off after some nice spirited driving.

The problem is after some nice spirited driving, with the muffler mounted on the car, it is to deep behind to bumper to get to it, and the muffler being about 500 degrees or w/e it runs at is kinda hard to get off. I got some acetone and some rubbing alchhol, ill see what happens.

Maybe you could drop the exhaust and use a heat gun if nothing else works!?

I used some wheel cleaner on it with a razor blade. Then I polished it up. All and all it didn't look too bad. Also, after the shield is on I can't see it even if I tried.

Thats why you get a one off test pipe so it looks like this and dont have to worry about it.

a small propane torch, just don't keep it on there for a long time or it will start to discolor the muffler. Just slowly run it back and forth for 15 or so seconds and it should come right off.

well, acetone, gasoline, mineral spirits, and a razor blade barely touched it, however they did remove the very thin layer of plastic that was fartherst towards the end of the exhaust tip, you can barely see the melted plastic unless you get right behind the exhaust and look for it. I was going to try a torch but I was afraid to discolor it, If you hit it with a torch and then wipe away the melted plastic it should work, but im to lazy to try it, and a gallon of gas and some other cheapo chemicals were all I was going to waste my money on. If I get home to boca anytime soon I have a butane torch in my garage, so Ill try it then. Im thinking of getting a custom axel back section made with just a magnaflow tip and no muffler, I kinda like the loud annoying noises my car made when I was driving w/out a muffler.

Try aircraft paint remover. Same thing happened to my Spoon n1 muffler. I managed to get off all the plastic goo off the muffler.

I used a razor blade very carefully and shaved off layers of it. Then followed that up with an SOS pad and polished it up. The SOS pad will take off the remaining plastic. Hope that helps.
