So you're putting your car back to stock after you modded the hell out of it and broke your own tranny huh? It's guys like you that are the reason why so many EVO and STi owners get denied perfectly reasonable warrantee claims. Thanks a lot

The dude at the dealership told me to bring it back to stock and bring it in. I was planning on buying a tranny and attempting to install it myself, but it would have ended in tragedy, as I've never swapped one before. I also don't know if I mentioned it, but my third gear went at 3k rpms at a slow cruise up a hill. I honestly thought my first or second would go out, but third.... at no boost...

As for everyone else. I kind of want to spend most of my money on suspension this time around, and then aim for a suitable and safe horsepower number. Evos seem to be able to make 330whp without much trouble but as you start to go higher, things seem to break. Mivec and the larger turbine sound cool, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the extra 8-10k it would cost me initially. I've seen many evo 8s for under 20k in my area, and they are only getting cheaper, but the cheapest I've seen MRs is around 28ish.

The stock STi does come with a forged crankshaft and forged rods, its the pistons that's the weak link!

Im in the same boat as you kind of...I had a dsm, then got a wrx, then went back to a dsm....I just sold my talon and am deciding between an 06 WRX(i dont want the sti cuz of the 6spd) besides the 06 wrx's come with the 2.5l or an 05 evo 8!

Well buyer beware when it comes to used evos. Especially ones with higher miles. Since you want handling, make sure you pick up either an 04 RS or an 05+ evo since it has the front LSD. Then if you go for the 05, you get the active center diff.

If you like modifying go with the IX. STI just too much of a hassle!

Wrong!!

the 03/04's have a smaller EH (9.8cm) not a smaller turbo (225 dollar part). the IX's turbo is the bigger one.

How does a GSR have 5 more HP than any other stock EVO? Is because you have one?

ALL TRIMS (RS,MR,GSR) HAVE THE SAME HOUSEPOWER & TORQUE

The 03/04 turbo had a 9.8 hot side
The 05 turbo has a 10.5 hot side
The 06 turbo has a 10.5 hot side and a larger compressor housing (cold-side, lol)

I wouldnt waste the money on an MR. The nicest part are the BBS rims and the aluminm roof. I dislike the six speed (heavier.) The bilsteins are actually slightly softer as well....would have to double check this.

Definately go for an 05 model if you are looking for a used 8. You will get the better hotside on the turbo as well as the ACD and LSD.

If you want a 9 you the benefit of the larger compressor housing and mivec. SE models also come with the BBS rims on the 06's.

Mod wise. IX's dont have cams yet (upgraded) but they are on the way. People have been upgrading the exhaust cam only so far (due to the mivec) You also cant plug and play a standalone...yet. They changed the plugs on the ECU. People have added the AEM by splicing it in. It doesnt sound like that is a route you plan on going anyways. But reflashes are available.

The VIII has the same potential as the IX when big mods are thrown at them. If you truly want the upgraded suspension over power....I would go with the 05RS. The RS has the aluminum roof, no wing, the 5 speed, and less frills inside. RS owners....do you have power windows? It would be the lightest of the three models with the same power output.

Hope some of this helps.

Go Both Ways

Fix the WRX, keep it, and then go out and buy an Evo. That way your can't complain either way.

Buy the Evo beleive me you won't regret it. MR for RR or Highway driving 6 speed is nice. If your thinkig of Drag racing I'd go with the any of the other models with the 5 speed.

Good luck
I agree with him,

If your looking to do simple mods for a while go with a newer model, if your going evo god then go for an 8.

either way you will be happier than in your sooo-beeeee

I couldnt stand them when i took it for a drive. one of my friends own a 06 sti and the other has a modded 05. They drive too.... I dunno how to even put it but, weird and they feel just heavier.

I know its a bias statement, but you will see most evo owners are very happy with their pick.

As a recent WRX to EVO convert, all I can say is that you won't regret it. Just be careful when buying a used EVO. I must have looked at atleast 7 EVOs before I bought mine from a private party. Trying to find an unmodified EVO is pretty hard. Good luck with the transition.

Test drove them both back to back hard in the same day.....STI=more stock torque, softer and slower turn in, slighty better fit and finish and is more comfortable....Evo=better looking, razor sharp turn in, easier to mod, absolutely legendary bullet proof motor, 03's ride harsher IMO worth changing out to better ride quality, MR pricing may not be worth it, easy to make a MR plus...without much cash outlay. EVO=**** eatin grin ear to ear everyday for 3 years...
