help: lawyer/DMV titling a car question

my friend who i will not name for privacy reasons purchased a car 2 years ago from an exotic car dealership. after putting down 7k on this car and driving it home, very shortly after, the dealer went out of business. ironically the dealer went out of business for criminal reasons and defrauding customers. my friend never got the title for the car, and interestingly enough, the loan never went through either. so for the past two years of driving the car, never had to make a payment on it, and has been able to drive it around by putting temporary tags on it every couple months (a few bucks at the DMV). the car is insured with full coverage as well. this is in texas, and a run on the VIN number doesn't not show the car stolen, and the person who has the title resides in florida somewhere (obviously PO). the car was purchased here in texas. now, my friend really needs the title for the car if they ever wants to sell it, and quite honestly would put the mind at ease if he outright had the title. my question to anyone here, how can we go about getting the title?

i know from personal experience in michigan, i was able to get a title for a VW rabbit GTI my friend had sitting in his yard after a renter abandoned it. all i had to do was go into the DMV, ask for a form to get the title, have a cop run the VIN to verify it wasn't stolen, and they gave me a new title for the car. i don't remember if it was considered a salvage title or not.

my friend does not want his car to be considered salvaged as that would also ruin the value of the car, as well as making it hard if not impossible to have full coverage on it.

any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. we are open to pretty much anything...

go to the local DMV and register for a "lost title" they will run a search on the vin to see if its stolen and it will also show if it has a salvaged title... If and when the vin check comes back and clean then he will get his title... It should cost arond $20.00 or less... and all i can say is so far he is pretty lucky...
