I have to get under my Evo to see what you're trying to describe. All driveshafts have to be balanced, so it probably is a balance weight that was knocked off. Do you feel any vibrations coming from under your car when you're driving?

Its exactly that. A balance weight, just like on your rims. If you dont still have the peice you will have to take it into a drive shaft shop and have it re balanced.

Depending on how many onces the weight was the extra vibration you get may or may not be noticable. Either way it will put more stress on the drive shaft isolator and cause premature wear on it. Its really no big deal to get it balanced anyway. The DS comes out easy and a descent shop shouldnt charge too much to balance it. Just remember to drain yout transfer case before you remove it or you'll dump fluid every where.

That sucks man. The DS comes out really easy. There are 4 bolts one the rear section where it bolts up to the yolk on the rear diff. I believe 2 bolts where the isolator bolts to the bottom of the car and the front yolk just pulls out of the TC after that. That will save you some money if the shop doesnt have to pull it for you.

This may sound completly stupid, but if it were me I would find something that weighed a few grams and duct tape it to the spot where the weight was. Maybe a nut off of something and put it on the spot where the weight was then go completly around the DS with the tape so its nice and secure. May sound completly crazy, but worth a try.

One time I broke an alternator belt on one of my old nissans driving from Tucson to phoenix and drove it 80 miles using a pair of of my girlfriends panty hose as a makeshift belt.

Use a large hose clamp with the heavy screw part where the weight was. If one doesn't do it, use two.
