Took the Evo to ButtonWillow this weekend! Pics!

Had a blast taking the Evo to its first track day weekend. A bunch of us drove out to ButtonWillow Raceway and had a ton of fun, spent a lot of money, burnt a lot of fuel, and destroyed one car.....

Everyone was ok... except for the Subaru 2.5RS with the STi engine/tranny/drivetrain swap. The brake rotor broke completely in two causing the owner to spin out, hitting a barrier. He and his passenger were unhurt.

Here are some photos from the weekend.

Here is what happens when you run no cat... 3" turbo back exhaust... very rich.... and 110 leaded gas in a downshift...

And here is the poor 2.5RS an hour or so before its unfortunate death.... (i didn't take a photo of the crashed car... i was more concerned at the time about the owner)

Bunch more here: http://www.kalionzes.com/buttonwillow

(I'm reducing size and adding more photos as i get them done)

edit:

The flame photos don't do it justice. They were MASSIVE. At least twice as big as captured on camera.

My friend had a camcorder inside his big turbo WRX mounted on his harness bar and is currently working on the video editing. On the third lap I pass him in my Evo and he gives chase. He never catches me though. I just kept increasing the distance as i pulled ahead. I'll post the video when he's finished with it.

^^^ yeah. I did see her out there a few times. Terry the owner of that Vette was one of the instructors and had passengers of all ages and skill levels. The guy was truly a great driver. I spent the first half of Saturday learning the track by tail gating him as best I could. The second half he chased me around the track and had other students following him.

Wish I could've made it! There's a list of things I want to do for some car prep before a track day that I haven't had a chance to do yet...... a bit of a lesson from the 2.5RS. You need to make sure you stuff is in top shape! Glad to hear they came out okay.

Yeah. I was hoping for my P-Zero Corsa's to arrive in time. They didn't. I was on factory Advans.

A lesson?

The cars front right rotor broke clean in two and it was its first day ever on the track. The shop car was finished about a month ago and only driven to and from the shop, a few miles a day. The rotors only had 5k miles on them when they were transplanted from a totaled brand new STi into this car.

It was a freak accident. Something that i personally think couldn't have been avoided. The driver has raced professionally for years FYI and his father was a national champion in Bulgaria.

Hmm.... a NASA instructor in a built Z06 vs myself in a slightly modded Evo....

When not "playing with students", his car would hit 140's in the straights. I think I hit 120 once.... and ended up braking late. hehe.

Hmm... I met an older guy last week and he mentioned these guys to me. I think his dad AND mom were rally racers?

Well, that does sound like a bit of a freak accident. I have seen guys driving around with hairline cracks in their rotors though. Rotors may have been damaged/abused from the wrecked STi and not been visible. And I'd just be sketchy of taking parts from a wrecked car, kinda superstitous!

Looking at the pics of the Z06 vs. evo, that Z06 corners FLAT!

Given equal drivers, I don't think a stock evo can keep up with a stock Z06 anywhere. Well, unless it's off road or snowing! It would still take probably a 500whp Evo with some serious suspension mods to keep up with a stock Z06.
