They could have just acted like cops to see your license with your address printed on it. They sound more like thugs than a cop, and I really doubt Canada's tactics are much different than the U.S.'s.

The dead don't argue. Which is what a person should expect as a result from a gun battle against multiple police officers (think training, high capacity LEO magazines, and bullet-proof vests).
