If plastic primer is used, sanding is not necessary??

Is there another piece of lense for the lower parking light? Was it painted?

 

The lights look very good. Much better than stock, and look almost "factory."

 

I was thinking of taking my IX headlights apart i hate that yellow amber turn singnal . Good Job bro any tips for getting them back together?

 

How do you reuse the factory sealant? Don't you some what ruin it when heating and seperating?

 

factory sealant is very adhesive...however...i'd still replace it due to lack of it in certain areas from separation...
don't rush your headlights...i've seen some ishty jobs...and please don't mix paints...

 

Correct, no sanding needed. Since the painted area is enclosed I'm willing to bet plastic primer isnt needed either, but i didn't want to gamble!

 

I don't really care what anyone else says here, you don't need anything more than the factory sealant, there is plenty of it on the lights when you take them apart. You loose 0% of the sealant in the process, it just sticks to each side.......... example tearing a peice of pizza in half, do you loose any cheese in the process? No. Reheat the *****es and it goes right back to normal........... I laugh thinking about these fools that are removing the stock sealant and replacing it with silicone.......... This stuff is 50 times better than silicone..

I used a heat gun only because i saw someone do it on honda lights......... The oven might be a better way but i don't have the ***** to put my $1000 headlights into the oven..........

Getting them back together;

Heat the sealant as hot as you possably can without melting any plastic...... then just reassemble...... If you have any gaps reheat the headlight and use a clamp to close the gap....... be sure to allow it to cool before removing the clamp..... vice grips work well for me.

Thanks. Your lighs look good. I am going to try mine this weekend. I have decided if I want to paint the lower turn signal reflector, or leave it chrome yet. What is your view on that?

 

i painted mine.......... It does washout the turn signal pretty well but we have sidemarkers too so i'm not so worried.

looks good. I just did mine the other day and they look great. I had this mustang guy come come up to me from our dorms and asked how much I paid for my headlights.....lol. I told him I painted them...needless to say he had this look of astonishment on his face.

PS: and for the people re-using the factory glue...just be sure to use some clear silicone to seal the outside lip when you're done

 

Another good tip is to use an adhesion promoter like Bulldog brand to help the paint stick to the plastic/chrome. Most auto parts stores carry adhesion promoter. I know PepBoys has Bulldog.

 

A heat gun or the oven can distort the plastic. I usually drain the water out of my water heater into a big bucket and and drop the light assembly in for 15 minutes. They pull apart easy.

3M 5200 black sealant is great or ureathane windsheild sealant works. Heating them a little helps it flow too.
