How much oil actually gets shot out from the blow by, in to your intake tube before the turbo? I was just wondering if spending money on a catch can was really necessary?

you can just put a breather filter there if you want... a catch can is a mostly dress up, slightly functional item. it keeps oil out of your intake which goes back into the turbo and can get all gunked up. if you have an aftermarket intake and run the hose back into it, after a couple thousand miles you can take the intake out and wipe up quite a bit of oil. it serves a purpose... but there are cheaper alternatives
If you track your car, or drive the crap out of it, the catch can can make a big difference. For a while I was having a big problem with my tune... Works couldn't figure out why my evo wasn't running right. Turns out that the MAF sensor was fouled by oil. Problem solved once I cleaned off the MAF and installed a catch can. Hate to see what the inside of my intercooler looks like!
It's not necessary. If your car doesnt burn any oil it's useless basically. Instead you can run seafoam through your motor every 30k or so miles and it'll clean all that gunk of anyways,
i had one in my 03 8 and after 8 months i went to drain it and not even a drop of oil came out. you could see some residue in the clear lines but nothing in the can. while it cant hurt and also looks good in your engine bay i really dont think they are a priority unless you have a heavy oil burning car. to each his own!
I like the comfort of knowing that no oil will end up spooled through my turbo and into my IC. Breather filter will be ok untill it clogs with oil and then blows your cams seals from not enough ventilation
