Works better at doing what? Definitely not cleaning up the emissions of the car!

Why not just run a hi-flow cat? What are the HP/TQ differences between stock cat, hi-flow cat, and test pipe? It's probably so negligible that it's better just to leave the cat on and not have to worry about tickets or destroying the environment.

just a small bit of advice, since you drive an evo, leave the Cat alone.....just go and get a new Cat-back exhaust, the exaust on the evo is very restricting...I've seen gains of 30 to 50 HP by just doing a nice cat back, and if you do a test pipe, just remember that you have to swap them in and out every time you go in for emissions, and up here in PA thats once a year

I want to know what exhaust you're talking about. The most I've seen is 10 hp.

i already have a 3inch cat back with a 3inch downpipe.. with the stock cat.. but the opening for the stock cat is so much smaller.. then that of the exhaust and the downpipe.. i feel that the stock cat is robbing a lot of horsepower.. of course i woudlnt' know for sure because i never dyno'd it, but base on butt dyno alone.. i can feel a big difference

He does have a cat-back. He has the RMR downpipe, test pipe and cat-back. Originally he had the test pipe in there but he was afraid hes going to get a huge fine if he gets caught so.... he put his stock catalytic converter back on.

i was told by a shop that does nothing but custom exhuast setups that with 3" catback it will be liek u dont even have a cat at all. and if u get a header and downpipe, the cat will hold back very little horsepower and to only take it off if at a track or whatnot but not for everyday driving. (he estimated maybe a thenth off your time with the cat in place with all them mods)

can anyone verify that? cause that is just what they told me.

It should offer similar power to a test pipe, lessen chances of check engine lights, not get you tickets, and keep your emissions cleaner. Sounds like a lot of positives with almost no negatives. You shouldn't need those last few HP on the street anyways... just run the test pipe on the track/strip where it's usually alright to do it anyways.

Taiwan: Have you considered the Buschur 3" high flow cat? Do you know if it will bolt up to your RMR downpipe and your cat-back?

Most any cat back on an EVO...The exhaust on the EVO's Suck, it its VERY VERY restricting. Search for Dyno charts for EVO's, the Dyno results I saw were a gain of about 45-50 HP. I just dont remember what post they were on, but I did see them on this site...just try searching.

Do beleive you're mistaken. People are seeing 40-50 hp gains with a boost controller / AFC / exhaust. But nobody is seeing 40-50 hp from an exhaust.

I wish.

I tried searching the CARB site but that's not exactly easy. I found an EPA document saying that if you unwittingly screw up the emissions system you can be fined up to $1,000. There were also references to $2,500 in there, so I'm wondering if that's the generic fine.

I also found a link for the state of Maine, not that it's close to Cali, that said something to the effect of like $2,500 if you're an individual who does it, or $25,000 if you're a repair shop that knowingly does it.

Doesn't Cali use remote sniffers to check exhaust of passing cars? I'd think those would be able to sniff out a test pipe pretty easily.
