Well, not always under the hood. Especially considering the added length of a longitudinally mounted v8 versus a transverse mounted I-4. Most likely they had to shift the firewall WAY back, thus shoving the driver further back in the car. No small task.

I don't think they are built on the lancer chassis. Looks like a welded tube chassis like those nascar ones to me. The body panels just resemble the Evo ones.
