any wiring gurus here?
Anyone know if I can hook a stock MR oil temperature gauge to tap into the water temperature stock gauge wires on my Evo 8? I don't have a oil sending unit and I want to temporarily hook up my gauges. I see a white wire and a blue wire with a white stripe coming out of the oil temp gauge what colors should it hook up too?
thanks in advance

Even with the picture in front of me its hard to tell what goes where in a combination meter. However it looks like its a yellow wire with a black stripe for engine coolant.

why would you want to hook up a oil temp gauge up to water temp? just leave the gauge unhooked until you get the actual oil temp sensor. if you really want to make it work, get a multimeter and hook it up to the wires on the back of the functioning water temp gauge. i would assume one wire is grounded, and the other is 0 to +5V depending on water temp. if this is the case, it should be the same for the oil temp gauge. try it... the voltage will be so low it wont hurt it if you mix the two up.
try em both. you need to hook them both up, and if it doesn't work, switch them around. i would suggest trying the striped wires together first. usually there is some sort of diode for protection on electronic components, so if you have them backwards, it wont hurt it.
i think your crazy too. it is 100% pointless to hook a oil temp gauge up a water temp signal. it wont read anything useful to you, and in the end, you'll just have to cut the wires and get the oil temp sensor anyway.
