I only had the a/c running with the resurculation button on....so I was only getting air from the actual heater not the outside air both last night and this morning....if that makes sense?

The sniff test: stick you finger in and smell. Engine oil has a characteristic odor, same is true for gear oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze, brake fluid and dog pee (to name a few of the liquids you may encounter)
.
So if you nose works you should familiarize it with the smells of the various automotive fluids so you will immediately know what your car has leaked and hence the possible sources.
My guess is that the even when on recirc the heater is still taking in a portion of outside air. Otherwise, in the case of an exhaust leak, carbon monoxide could concentrate inside the vehicle.
