Light steering on an IX MR?

Hey all,

Driving previous Evo's I've never really come across this, but my IX MR right now feels like it has really light steering (like the power steering is working too well). I prefer a heavier feel so that I have more feedback. Before I look at modifying the PS pump pulleys or something it would be nice to know if this is normal, or something that just my car has (and therefore a possible warranty issue!). I could just take it to the dealer now, but it's pretty subjective so they'll probably just say there is nothing wrong!

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks!

S.

Double check alignment....actually I WOULD just take it in for an alignment. Mine was feeling the same way....and shame on me, I hadnt checked the tires on my last oil change, and the front had eaten the inside tread completely bald. I had a 4 wheel alignment and all 4 were like 2 degrees off in one direction or another. I only have 6200 miles on her too...

I'm going to the dealer on Thursday so I will get them to check alignment too - car only has 750 miles so the alignment should not be out yet, and if it is they should fix it. I will double check everything.

Thanks for the replies!

My steering is also pretty light considering the quick ratio of the Evo's steering. However, I get a lot of feed back, too much in my opinion and it pisses me off. I don't want to feel every little bump in the road through my steering wheel. I already feel it through the rest of the car due to the overly stiff suspension. My Evo handles great but it's like a huge go-cart.

That's the point. You paid a premium to have it that way. It's a " race " care.

Hmm, I love that feature. Try getting some fatter/fluffier (less stiff) tires. That'll reduce the feed back a bit for you (as well as the handling).

Hi all,

Apologies for the confusion - let me rephrase... I incorrectly used the 'feedback' term. I do get plenty of feedback, which I love, I actually meant more wheel resistance at higher speeds. At low speeds the light feeling is fine, but at higher speeds the power steering should taper off and get heavier to improve high-speed stability and control.

Does everyones steering stay really light at higher speeds?

Thanks!

Don't some of the fancier cars like some BMWs use some kind of active control system to stiffen up the wheel at higher speeds? Does that really increase stability and control of the car or just the feeling of it?

Mine does that as well. IMO it has mostly to do with the fact that the evo rack is only 2 1/4 turns lock to lock. When you're going faster you have less time to react and that quick rack makes for very light steering.

the turning becomes a little stiff but also shorter.... so ya dont have to turn the wheel as much to do the same manuever at a lower speed. so at low speeds its not super touchy for a nice daily drive, but at high speeds itll jump over a lane almost as fast as the evo will

remember mitsu really soften up the IXs. But if its too soft you can just have your caster adjusted, but i would make sure that you have the right tire pressure in and every thing else is good, before you go and do something like playing with the caster. I doubt there is actualy a problem though.
